And this may be the question of the ages. How is it that 1/3 of our voting population doesn't vote? This seems to be an overall trend since at least the 1940's. At times, I wish that voting was a mandatory duty and not something that is considered a hassle by so many.

I canvassed in one community—lower-middle class—and was gobsmacked at some interactions with people. Is it lack of education, is it years of being ignored or not knowing how to demand a response from our elected? Has dark money broken elections? Look at Congress & the Senate FFS!!

Over the last 30-40 years, definitely, but I saw this trend going back before WW2. Not sure if this was purely the effects of Jim Crow or lack of access to the voting box, but it's like some people are just along for the ride, regardless of where the car is heading.

Well I won’t be giving up and plan to canvass in a small impoverished city near me this time. Have volunteered there all summer & continue to do so. It is critical to get out the vote. Mamdani’s reached those who normally ride along and my early presence should mitigate some stranger danger. 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽

Wasn't it always so? I'm pretty sure nazi Germany was described as 1/3 persecuting another third while the rest watched.

That 1/3 has been the anchor around the neck of this country from the very beginning. Patriots versus British loyalists and the abstainers unwilling to pick a side. They have finally accomplished completely taking down the government, just shy of 250 years. They are as dangerous and deadly as MAGA.

”Patriots versus British loyalists and the abstainers unwilling to pick a side. ” If loyalists would have won, slavery would propably been over much soomer.

Possibly. Or not. The growth of liberalism in England did not necessarily translate to the same in its colonial interests around the globe, even into the 20th century. India, Hong Kong, and others for example.

Aussie Opinion @aussieopinion.bsky.social

In Australia we have compulsory voting and it works. We get a result that we all chose. In America the 40% that sit it out have no right to complain. FFS get up and vote at mid-terms and save your country (let's hope he allows you to actually vote).

Considering how much their vote affects us around the world they should be compelled to vote.
