They need to learn to plant trees along their streets
Um, that particular street is built atop a former volcanic crag. Basically, very solid, dense rock with no soil. Ergo no trees.
Very interesting! I meant in general though
I humbly invite you to visit the fair City of Edinburgh, if you haven't already. It's one of the greenest cities there is. Trees everywhere. Except for the igneous outcrops, and the odd poorly conceived urban development.
For sure. Just going through google street view the actual streets themselves are very empty of trees. It’s not just Edinburgh. Many places are like that. Example:
I think you need to understand Edinburgh. This street is South Bridge. It's built entirely on raised brick arches. Again, not suited to trees. Eye-roll.
Typical blocks. Zero trees along any of the streets. (I’m talking about trees along streets not the green space flanking this area). I don’t understand
Every street looks like this. In every city in Europe
Very cool info! Thank you.
This is Princes Street Gardens. Literally the city centre. The Castle towers above it. I can hardly think of any place with more green spaces than Edinburgh.
I’m not talking about “green spaces”. I specifically said actual streets
What, like this city centre street? Its Princes Street Gardens literally slap-bang in the middle of the city looked over by the Castle.
That is an image of the A7 road which is part of the Old Town. That would be many, many years before town planning introduced trees/green parks. The New Town , built from 1767, has many tree-lined streets and even more complete green parks for all of its residents.
Jeez! The first image shows entire parks! Have you been to Edinburgh? The place is full of trees. It’s nearly at the stage of becoming a ‘Million Tree City’. Amazing considering it’s only 100 sq. miles! (NY city is 500 sq. miles)
I’m not talking parks! I’m literally focused on the streets. Every street you walk down is barren as fuck. It’s depressing.
Circus Lane, New Town, Edinburgh. ‘Trip Advisor’ - Mark. “Barren as f*ck. 😉
There’s no trees 🤷♂️. Beautiful though.
Oh that’s good. It just seems very hard pressed to find any tree lined streets. Also, that’s not an excuse to not have tree lined streets. Streets/sidewalks are constantly getting redone.
Yeah, that “constantly getting redone” approach is not good. It’s a wasteful and destructive way to plan and run cites. On Turtle Island its normalized because our cities are new, but we are talking about streets that have been around for hundreds if not a thousand years. Leave them be.
Any new development in Scotland must have green, social spaces. Every one. As you say we ain’t gonna rip up historic streets to plant single trees where entire parks already exist across the entire city.
Pretty sure most streets and sidewalks have been redone and ripped up at some point in the past say 50 years. It’s not difficult to put trees in
How many times have you been to Scotland?
Yes. Beautiful. Still no trees on the streets. 🤷♂️
Hehehe
There’s little need for tree-lined streets when you have literally entire parks full of trees on your doorstep. I had a flat in the New Town and everyone on the street had access to the park opposite. Each block has its own park!
Yes the parks are great but why not continue that along the streets. It looks barren af. Also it helps reduce temperatures etc. especially important with climate change. Paris is undertaking a huge tree planting program. NYC is also finally putting along the streets.
I can honestly say I’ve never read from any source where Edinburgh was described as “barren af”. Never.
Really? I’m sorry I’m literally all over the place and every street looks the same with zero trees. But ok.
Reduce temperatures??! It’s Scotland we’re talking about here, right? It’s bloody freezing most of our year! 😆
I get it. I live in Vancouver. You guys still at risk for heat waves like us
