Had a few cases over the years where someone had “senior XYZ” on their CV but ref had no senior. Or where they’ve changed their title on their CV to match the job ad but their actual role was different. Hiring managers often want to give benefit of the doubt - but it’s never worked out. I veto now.
I work with one and am fed up with clearing up after them.
Their LinkedIn profile is in way above their current role and competence.
Your job maybe. There’s not a chance they’re not checking employment history in some jobs.
It’s the ones doing contract roles via an agency that are an issue… HR at the client won’t have been involved to give a reference. And the agency aren’t exactly neutral in their recommendation…
Even then, there are jobs where you’re highly unlikely to get away with it. The safeguarding around working with children, for example.

Depends on the employer and role. I interviewed someone and they’d ’misinterpreted’ their education on their CV. It failed back checks and the job offer was withdrawn.
Clearly there are jobs you cannot do if you are not really qualified, as much as you’d like to give brain surgery a go.
