I'm not sure I understand love without hope. Love is hope. Love is despair. Even if you don't want something from the object of your affection, chances are you still want something *for* them--to succeed, to be happy, etc.

The idea that you can't really know someone as long as you want something from them--I suppose it implies that knowing someone must be objective as knowing the truth. To assume you know someone because you love them is like assuming you understand the meaning of a painting because it's touched you.
