They agreed as part of the surrender to allow him to continue to be emperor (their surrender was technically not unconditional, like the Germans).

No, that is not true. There was no such agreement and it wasn't in the surrender, which was unconditional. It was a decision MacArthur made postwar even though Truman didn't like it (though he also didn't override it) and it was very unpopular in the US at the time.

So doing a little reading around and it appears you are likely correct about no agreement on that prior to the surrender. Apologies. And, you know, my undergrad degree is in history, with an emphasis in modern Am history, so no reason I should have realized that 🤷 BTW, My dad received his . . .

. . . draft notice VJ Day and ended up in Tokyo in the USAAF in or near occupation headquarters, and had taken many pictures and 16mm film of MacArthur showing up at the HQ for his work day, the Imperial Palace (right next door), the Ginza Strip, burned out blocks of buildings, etc.

They also engaged in lots of flagrantly improper misconduct, in effect a conspiracy the prosecutors and defendants were both in on, to coordinate testimony at the tribunal so as to make sure nobody said anything implicating Hirohito.
