Instead of trying to build a real AI, they've just tried to build something which can convincingly and consistently pass the Turing test, but rather than the Turing test proving that LLMs is capable of thinking, LLMs just prove that the Turing test is a flawed method of testing real AI.
It’s a trick, a very clever trick which can convincingly fool a lot of people, but a trick nonetheless. LLMs are no more an AI than David Blane is capable of actual magic or reading your mind. Rubes will gawp in awe only because the showmanship they see is hiding the mundane mechanics underneath.
