Watched a vid about Americans wearing Canadian flags when they travel. Don’t do that. We have our reputation because we built it by being kind and respectful. It’s akin to stolen valour to me. It’s gross. If you aren’t being treated well abroad change minds by being overly kind and respectful.

Yeah. It’s weird to impersonate people from another country. I don’t think any other country does this to another. It’s also weird because they are soooo proud to be American…. Until it’s inconvenient when travelling to other countries because of their reputation for arrogance and rudeness.

A more generous approach to the problem of your feeling offended might be to realize that they do it for safety.
No other country pretends to be from another country while travelling. It’s weird. It then effects actual Canadian reputations cuz people pretend to be us while still being arrogant assholes on vacation. Easy fix for Americans is to be overly kind and respectful instead and maybe change some minds.
It looks like you are assuming that American travelers are not kind or respectful while overseas. This is faulty thinking. They are afraid, though, and I don't blame them one bit.
This is what we have been told by people abroad when they encounter Americans. I’ve heard from my friends for decades about Americans pretending to be us and also about their arrogance while travelling. That is the reputation Americans have cultivated. Obviously not all of them but enough of them.
Okay. But, see, here on Bluesky, you are almost certainly not addressing those people. Show some respect. Be kind.
Reasons off the top of my head for the reputation they’ve cultivated: 1. Getting upset that other countries don’t speak “American” 2. Getting upset that other countries don’t accept American currency. (Currency exchange exists for a reason) Don’t like us’s reputation…change. Don’t steal ours.
I was never unkind or disrespectful. I am to the point because of character limits. The Americans who do this need to stop doing it. It’s grossly inappropriate. Seriously if you don’t want this reputation while travelling try being better instead of stealing a Canadian identity.
My friend, a world traveler, has had a Canadian flag path on her backpack since trump's first term. It's a safety feature. I am sure she doesn't see it as "stealing." I have been asked by multiple Canadians to fly the Canadian flag at my home in the US as a sign of support, but nowhere else? Hmm.
The Americans stealing our identity while travelling has existed my entire life. Since the 80s and probably long before I existed. If you want to fly a Canadian flag as support right now that’s cool, because you’re not pretending to be Canadian while doing it.

When I travelled a lot in the ‘80’s and ‘90’s, a huge number of Americans we met backpacking had Maple Leaves sewn to their packs. Sadly, Americans have always thought they’re special, and never got why the rest of the world looked at them like 😒, but still disguised where they were from.

You can't change people's minds or impressions by simple acts of kindness/respect. I was in Norway in May. A local asked where I was from. California, USA (tossed in the CA, thinking that'd help). He immediately does a Nazi salute and 😂, telling me that's the USA now. Is that the worlds impression?
I think you can change minds absolutely. It probably is the world’s impression of the USA. You have a man claiming Americans want a dictator. Canada feels a bit different I guess because we know it’s not all of you. Unfortunately that’s something you guys can hopefully overcome.
This is an old story told by Canadians. I've never met an American wearing a Canadian flag while traveling. I've always dismissed it as an urban legend.
Ask Europeans/Australians, people commenting that tour guides would come into the Canadian embassy and ask for Canadian pins. When asked why they were told exactly this. I’ve had Americans tell me to my face they’ve done this. Just because you have never personally seen it doesn’t make it untrue.
