Minneapolis (or any city that has significant snow cover part of the year) can never be as 'walkable' as a neighborhood in Charleston, Atlanta, Austin, even DC. There's a latitude restriction where walkable only applies about 8 months or less out of the year, and with kids it gets even harder.

walking 10 minutes to the metro, an absolute nightmare. walking 20 minutes to whereverthefuck you found a parking spot, an absolute delight. also why is she doing groceries every day when some years back she insisted she's not a foodie. i have questions.

I've been in different Paris eras. Some were better than others. When I was first there at age 19, we had an extremely difficult time attempting to avoid dog poop. Montreuil was AWFUL. Had to jet my shoes!! About 10 years later there was still poop but not nearly as much!

We chose our home for proximity to transit (3 routes 1/2 block away & 2 more 5 mins away). Ten mins is still not much. Also not sure why she shops every day. We use a folding shopping cart 1X/wk for stores a 1/2 & 1 mile away and use our corner store for small trips. Delivery's also a thing now.

The right wing “walkable city panic” must have been a big part of last year’s progressive conspiracy theory, because my aunt mentioned it last Christmas. Not needing a car and having things closer is freeing not confining as some seem to believe.

The weirdest thing about this conspiracy theory is that they insist the concept of walkable neighborhoods means you can't ever leave it or use a car. No one ever said this & I can't figure out where this originated, except an inability/lack of experience to imagine a different way of urban design

May I introduce the concept of the Shopping Trolly: www.galeria.de/kueche-und-h... It's a rolling bag for carrying groceries home a few blocks. Also, let's introduce the idea that you only buy what you need for a day or two at a time, rather than huge loads of stuff to store. Just-in-time-shopping!

A lot of "anti-urbanists" (is that what we call them?) act like the necessity of larger grocery hauls in they're typically exurban communities is a virtue because the decadent city dwellers are less prepared for when the SHTF because they have a week less of food in their dwelling

Shouldn't the purpose of a society be that we don't have to prepare for the shit hitting the fan? I feel like, if that is a reasonable fear, we have failed as a society. COVID did happen, yes. Somehow, people in cities in Germany didn't die as fast as folks in red states in the US, IIRC. Hmmm...

Also, when restaurants are affordable as groceries, and on your way home, you are more likely to eat at them. Lower rents enable all sorts of nice stores and services at street level. Different types of public transit server different needs. Use appropriate public transit for best results in cities.

I feel like constant micro exposure to the germs of the world better prepares our bodies to fight larger attacks than isolation. Obviously, there are greater risks with larger, more virulent diseases, or closer exposure. But I think it's healthier, long term, to get out regularly. Not a doctor, tho.

She left out the real reason why most americans who don't want walkable cities actually don't want them: racism, and classism. Walkable cities imply public space is well cultivated and available to all members of the public. Including people of color and poor people.

European walkable cities have large public squares. They are purposely inviting, with shaded benches, fountains, and native plants. The US policies of wealth inequality and intentional homelessness are at odds with this form of city planning.

If we want walkable cities, we have to address wealth inequality and housing insecurity and embrace the idea that it's good, actually, to have public spaces that are free to *all* members of the public.

In our Philly neighborhood, we're fortunate to have cafes, boutiques, markets, and after school programs and doctor's offices, plus a lot of playgrounds for kids. We have to go farther afield for movie theaters, but there are just fewer of those than there used to be, and we had no summer day camps.

That's great! We had to leave our last walkable neighborhood after the landlord indicated he was planning to raise the rent significantly. Our neighborhood had no fewer than two dozen coffee shops that I could walk to, as well as six bars and a half dozen brunch venues.

jan 3, 2025, 7:21 am • 0 0 • view

What it did not have, however, was jobs that paid enough for ppl living in the neighborhood to be able to pay ever increasing rents. Also, only an urgent care and no GP. No day care. No walkable schools.

That sucks. After fourth grade our kids had to leave the neighborhood for middle school. One was only going a mile away, but the other had to take the bus downtown. Rents have definitely gone way up since we bought, and our property tax is now higher than our rent the last time we paid that.

My main #hottake on walkable cities is that we can have truly walkable cities OR we can turn housing into instruments for generating and storing capital. That liberals are determined to have both at once is the primary tension preventing the emergences of more walkable cities in blue states.

They severely limit housing supply, there's no by-right construction in Britain, it actually supports this thesis because their housing crisis is bad for the same reason America's housing crisis is bad. Even in places like NYC or SF where walkability is better, building/upzoning is impossible.

The statement is that it's walkable cities *or* a brutal housing market (to paraphrase). London has both. The UK's planning system isn't relevant - part of the why, sure, but the why doesn't matter to disprove the statement.

elaineparks.bsky.social @elaineparks.bsky.social

Not quite. The statement(s) are: the Americans that oppose walkable cities often do so because of racism and classism. This mix of racism and classism precludes the design of walkable city centers that include inviting, public spaces open to everyone, black or white, rich or poor.

Thing is, it aint the cities. It's the good paying jobs, services, schools, and third spaces. If you can access ALL of those things within a 10 minute walk or a short bus ride, you basically have it made. The problem is, MOST of us can't. We either don't live nearby or there's no bus service there.

dec 31, 2024, 10:18 pm • 2 0 • view

Crazy3ddie @crazyeddie404.bsky.social

This is why I say there's a big difference between wealth and money. Wealth in America is concentrated in a handful of areas and owned by a small number of people. We don't need walkable cities, we need the wealth to be distributed widely enough that everything neighborhood has everything you need.

Crazy3ddie @crazyeddie404.bsky.social

To be sure, it's a very wealthy and well developed city, which is where everyone wants to live. The thing is, when a lot of progressives talk about walkability, what they're really talking about is road diets, bike shares, and rezoning for multifam condos. Basically "Cabrini Green, but nicer."

We get these all the time now. 90% of the time it just turns into gentrification with new condos starting at $500k for a 1bdrm. It's like if I asked a bunch of white progressives how to make the South Side walkable and sustainable, the answer is always "Get rid of all the poor people."

jan 1, 2025, 6:39 am • 0 0 • view
avatar
Defective Cook @novaoulx.bsky.social

So if it's meant to be affordable, then the answer is to let it fall into neglect and disrepair without the funding to maintain it, but if it's meant for other people, then it can only be for the super wealthy. And so the only viable solution is single-family homes. Right?

jan 1, 2025, 6:53 am • 1 0 • view
avatar
Crazy3ddie @crazyeddie404.bsky.social

It doesn't MATTER what you build there, how you plan it, or what you fund, if the wealth created by the people who live there ends up somewhere else. Single family, multifamily, there's no difference. Cabrini Green turned into a ghetto for the same reason Englewood did.

jan 1, 2025, 1:41 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Crazy3ddie @crazyeddie404.bsky.social

The actual solution is wealth redistribution. That works (and has WORKED) exactly as well in a neighborhood full of singlefam homes as multifams. If the locals own all the businesses and directly provide/benefit from local services, the community can invest in itself. But that doesn't happen now.

jan 1, 2025, 1:44 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Crazy3ddie @crazyeddie404.bsky.social

Instead, these redevelopment projects inevitably attract investment from huge interstate or international businesses (Walmart et al) who have no incentive to invest in the community and can just as easily pack up and leave if they want to. And eventually, they DO, leaving the locals with nothing.

But if you take her 'logic' to its conclusion - nobody walks, everyone drives. And you will never be able to build your self out of that congestion. Never ever.

To be fair, living somewhere that, daily, sees both rain and snow and being forced to carry groceries through both, plus having a ten minute walk to the metro must be everyone’s idea of hell. Mustn’t it? Nobody could tolerate that whilst in their 20s.

And the “no one wants” dis is just so clearly “I don’t want,” she might as well be a shop keeper parking in front of her store all day and claiming there’s not enough parking at a community meeting about new bike lanes.

For some people (disabled, elderly, pregnant, ill) it very well may be, particularly in bad weather, but "walkable city" generally does not mean "no other means of travel city."

It's easier for the disabled to move around in walkable cities. Think about it, is it easier for someone in a wheelchair to move around a city infested with cars? Or nice open human oriented streets with no cars? Cars do not make it easier for the disabled to get around (relatively speaking).

My wife and I live in downtown Toronto and walk everywhere. Her 18 year old niece, who lives outside of Austin came to visit over the summer. The kid could not walk anywhere, like 5 minutes and she was complaining and suggesting an uber. It's mental.

Yeah Brianna might have a take that sounds crazy to you or me, but it's something a lot of people share. And I don't get it. Older disabled people I get, but a lot of young people get driven to school, then drive to their jobs and forget walking is normal.

Living in Austin, I get it. Unless you live in an outdoor strip mall (which is an option) basically nothing is walkable. Even if you want to take a pleasure walk there's a good chance you have to drive to get somewhere you can do that. That's the paradigm she understands

I also think people who don’t walk to get places don’t know *how* to walk. Being mindful, keeping to the right, moving aside if you have to stop, going at a quick clip and dressing appropriately for weather. I avoid walking in tourist spaces mainly because they don’t know how to walk right.
