Another simple pleasure for #ButterflyWeek -- a Common Wood-Nymph (Cercyonis pegala) in our woods just now. #Butterflies #Lepidoptera #Naturephotography

Close-up of a butterfly whose wings of brown and taupe tones make it very easy to miss him amongst the hay and twigs upon which he rests. But the giveaway is the striking eyespot in the corner of his upper wing: it has a shimmery, tanzanite-blue center surrounded by a ring of navy blue and another of pale gold.
