I'm convinced he chose that leaf deliberately Chickweed Geometer in our prairie just now Moths are amazing #Moths #MothsMatter #Leptember #Naturephotography

Close-up of pale orange moth with his wings spread open, resting on a leaf. His wings are marked by distinctive pink bands, and coincidentally (or by his choice?), the leaf is edged with the same pink.

A small golden butterfly is back-lit by the sun so that he appears translucent. He has an intricate pattern of brown and yellow markings on his wings. He rests on Foxtail grass, which is also back-lit to create a glowing effect.

Close-up of a moss-covered tree trunk, on which a drab-coloured moth is resting. He has a curious profile, with two sets of tufting near his head, but the tufting mimics the rough surface of the tree trunk, enabling him to blend in beautifully.

Close-up of a moth clinging to a small stick. His taupe-coloured wings are barely visible due to the angle and we see mostly just his face; however, we do get a flash of the orangish-yellow underwing for which he is named. His large, dark brown eyes peer out from beneath his antennae, which are giving the impression of a furrowed brow. His graceful legs are flexed and ready to advance further along the stick as if he is challenging the photographer to a duel.

Fitting end to #ButterflyWeek: a butterfly in the making #Butterflies #Lepidoptera #Naturephotography

A caterpillar with white, yellow, and black stripes clings, upside-down, to the underside of a leaf of Butterfly Weed. We see green fields and cloudy blue sky in the background.

Now seriously: how often do you stumble across two Agreeable Tiger Moths mating?! Found this pair in our prairie this morning. #Moths #MothsMatter #TeamMoth #Naturephotography

Time to play Spot The Moth™️ again, except I'm warning you -- this one's hard! #Moths #MothsMatter #Lepidoptera #Naturephotography

Looking downward at crabgrass and dandelion weeds. There may or may not also be a tiny black and white moth hiding in the photo.

Ending #ButterflyWeek with a Pearl Crescent on Butterfly weed (appropriately) in my native plants garden. #Butterflies #Lepidoptera #Naturephotography

Small orange butterfly with brown markings rests upon orange-and-yellow flowers. We see the green leaves of additional shrubs in the background.

"Hey! Whatchoo lookin' at?" #MothFaceFriday: a Carrot Seed Moth (Sitochroa palealis) wonders what my next move is gonna be. #Moths #MothsMatter #TeamMoth #Naturephotography

Close-up of the head of an ivory-coloured moth, who appears to be looking at us intently. His legs rest on nondescript leaves in a meadow, which forms the background. His ivory-coloured antennae are up and curled slightly toward the right, although not in parallel to each other, resulting in an almost cartoonish effect along with his literal bug-eyes.

Awaiting official confirmation of this, but I'm pretty sure this is the first-ever sighting of Anania plectilis in Wisconsin. I knew the second I spotted him yesterday that he was something special. Moth hunting is SO addictive! #Moths #MothsMatter #TeamMoth #Naturephotography

Close-up of small moth on the back of a burdock leaf. His wings are covered with an intricate pattern of taupe and ivory, creating a lace effect. Small drops of dew can be seen on the leaf.

Two Crocus Geometers side-by-side, spotted within a three-hour span. But is one a False Crocus Geometer and the other real? Seems the jury is still out on how to answer that. Meantime, I hope you relish this theme-and-variation example as much as I. #Moths #MothsMatter #TeamMoth #Naturephotography

Close-up of yellow moth with faint purplish-brown markings all over its wings. It rests on a decaying leaf. Close-up of a yellow moth that is very similar to the other except in the amount of purplish-brown markings. This specimen is sitting in clover.

Two females side-by-side for #ButterflyWeek. Both came to feed on clover yesterday. On the left, the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus); on the right, the Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes). Love the iridescent blue 'eyeshadow' on both. #Butterflies #Lepidoptera #Naturephotography

Close-up of a large yellow butterfly with black stripes, orange eyespots, and a band of bright blue along the edge of its lower wings. The butterfly is resting on a thistle leaf and we see green leaves throughout the background. Close-up of large black butterfly with small yellow dots, orange eyespots, and a band of bright blue along the edges of its lower wings. It is sipping from clover and we see the green meadow in the background.

Dreamed Monday night that I saw a Luna Moth. Tuesday came and no Luna, but I DID see this beauty for the first time: the Wavy-Lined Emerald (Synchlora aerata)! Second photo added to show scale even though my thumb is in embarrassing shape. Nature is amazing. #Moths #MothsMatter #TeamMoth

Close-up of beautiful pale green moth resting, wings open, on the back of a leaf of burdock. His wings are accented by soft, wavy white lines that connect across his upper and lower wings. Wider shot of the same moth on the same leaf, showing that the photographer is clutching the leaf between thumb and index finger in order to turn it over and expose the moth. The moth is no wider than the photographer's thumbnail.

Another simple pleasure for #ButterflyWeek -- a Common Wood-Nymph (Cercyonis pegala) in our woods just now. #Butterflies #Lepidoptera #Naturephotography

Close-up of a butterfly whose wings of brown and taupe tones make it very easy to miss him amongst the hay and twigs upon which he rests. But the giveaway is the striking eyespot in the corner of his upper wing: it has a shimmery, tanzanite-blue center surrounded by a ring of navy blue and another of pale gold.

A simple pleasure for #ButterflyWeek -- Clouded Sulphur (Colias philodice) on thistle in our meadow this morning #Butterflies #Lepidoptera #Naturephotography

Close-up of yellow butterfly, side view, sipping nectar from a purplish-pink thistle. Small and subtle markings on his wings reflect the colours of the thistle. Likewise, a faint pink border on the edges of his wings reflects the pink thistle blossom. We see the greens of additional thistle plants in the background.

#MothMonday choice this week is this expansive False Crocus Geometer (Xanthotype urticaria) I disturbed yesterday while picking gooseberries #Moths #MothsMatter #TeamMoth #Naturephotography

Close-up of large-ish yellow moth clinging to a blade of grass. His wings have faint purplish markings both as sprinkled dots and as bands across each wing. His thorax and legs are the same yellow as his wing colour. His feathery antennae are spread horizontally and beautifully offset by the green of the grass behind it.

Two Pearl Crescent butterflies share a dandelion head. The butterflies are orange with taupe-brown markings and edges, and both are heads-down into the flower to sip nectar. The background is of field greens.
