Don't want to be that old bloke but seriously, what is bloody xG and why should we care?

It means we played well and weren't lucky to get a point at the Hawthorns and I am more than happy to take some positivity.
I’m not saying you should care, seriously I am not, but I’ll take a non-expert crack at this. xG (expected goals) is an attempt to measure the quality of a team’s (or even a player’s) goal-scoring chances. Close-in shots at reasonable angles have higher xG than shots from outside the area. (1)
I don’t have a clue how it’s calculated and have to think it is somewhat subjective. If more than one outlet is measuring xG in a match, they’d likely have different numbers in the end, although I’d expect them to generally agree on how the teams performed respective to one another. (2)
Right. But what's the point? It's a meaningless statistic. Goals are what count.
It’s a way of quantifying who had more/better chances in a match. I thought interesting that Pompey had double the xG of West Brom
And yet we scored the same number of goals as them. 🤷♂️
