It may be too late. The narrative is now this: 'Hordes of foreign fighting-age men are invading our country and raping our women.' Without pushback, it's been set. What's up there, for all its falsity, is a national emergency. Starmer can't treat it as such. He can't do the performative...

True. Although after 14 years of the Tories blaming the previous government, it's a bit rich for them to complain.

I detest this Labour government, but expecting them to deal with a 14-year backlog in one year is ridiculous. And where do the asylum seekers go until then. Give them houses? That'll go down well. Holiday camps? How is that better? Let everyone out of prison and put in them there? Great idea. 🙄🫰

It’s what political bankruptcy looks like. Being (mis)led by populists and their ugly agendas. Starmer and his government clearly haven’t been placed to serve society. Feels like they’ve been abusing power for 15 years.

The main responsibility of government is to process asylum claims efficiently. & treat asylum claimants with decent respect until this can be accomplished. I can't see any of this in the BBC reporting or MSM reporting. Reform, Tories, & the current Labour Party do not define the UK's humanity.

You would think that "pander to an extremist party ideological anchor, then having legitimised it offer a watered down ersatz version of their policy" would be an easy concept for an experienced politician to both grasp and then discard as self defeating, but here we are.

They need to set up safe and legal routes and further speed up assessments for asylum. And, as @zoejardiniere.bsky.social says, they should grant blanket asylum to refugees from certain countries and allow them to work asap. bsky.app/profile/zoej...

It seems to me, that by chasing the ideals of other parties, well far right parties, Labour is demonstrating a lack of initiative, leadership and political direction.

I remember back in the 70s and 80s lots of people and organisations working together including the Labour party fought back against the fascists BNP, NF etc and won. Why aren’t we doing it again ?

Local authorities also use these hotels as homeless hostels. Would they close them if people started demonstrating against the homeless as being anti-social or similar?

The spin on what he says is peculiar. As far as I can tell he said Labour should accelerate the programme that removes any need to house asylum seekers in hotels. That makes sense, but framing it as closing them down seems to be attempting to appeal to Farage's dupes. That framing is foolish.

Why does the Labour Right run scared of the media? Labour will be criticised *whatever* we do: we should do the right thing and be damned if the headlines are bad. Taxes should be increased and the way we collect them needs massive improvement but we should SELL the benefits.

The entire political-media class from the lowliest nepo-baby intern at the Guardian to Sir Oswald Muesli himself in No 10, seems to have been mobilised to promote Racist Right ideologies. Only a few years ago the same people, at least in public, would have denounced anyone advocating that stuff.

One has to ask, what is the actual plan here? Assuming we comply with international law, we have to let in refugees and process them. We definitely need a faster and more humane way of doing so, but closing hotels doesn’t help with that.
