No, Lord Falconer. Labour should stop pandering to this nonsense. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...
The Daily Mail who have featured politicians who are appealing to those who want to send them all back The Daily Mail who have published total and utter rubbish about what refugees are entitled to etc The Daily Mail doesn't have the intelligence to know that they have a part to play in this
I see Starmer quoted as saying all these people who "arrive illegally" should be sent back. If accurate, it finally completes his journey to the dark side.
So when the asylum seekers in hotels, who get £9 per week are moved to other accommodation where they'll get £50 per week: what will the right wingers be moaning about?
I don't remember anyone voting for Lord Falconer, who does he represent?
I'd rather them continue their neoliberal course & when Your Party & the Greens join forces 🤞🏻 we may actually see some political changes rather than the same old same old 🤞🏻
It may be too late. The narrative is now this: 'Hordes of foreign fighting-age men are invading our country and raping our women.' Without pushback, it's been set. What's up there, for all its falsity, is a national emergency. Starmer can't treat it as such. He can't do the performative...
... 'standing on a beach with binoculars' bit, or turn up at asylum hotels to join 'concerned citizens'. So he cannot meet the demands of the narrative. Farage does. Starmer should have been on this the moment it started. Instead he's ceded to it, even tacitly endorsed it with half-arsed...
... tweets and Powellist nods. He's not only opening the door for Farage. He's rearranging the furniture. For me, at 66, Cameron was my worst PM in my lifetime. Worse even than Truss and Johnson. They were merely symptomatic of the systemic mess Cameron made. It may be that Starmer is about to...
... overtake him. I don't remember ever feeling this disgusted with a PM. He is not a stupid man, and this is starting to feel like intention.
Totally agree. Starmer has given a free rein to Farage and is now standing helplessly by while Reform foment hate and disorder.
For me, there are too many missteps. Missteps lead to confusion, a random walk, chaos. All Starmer's missteps seem to be taking him, with unerring accuracy, in the same direction, one that vested interests will happily embrace. I suspect corporate capture.
30% of the electorate (4 years from an election) is not a majority. The vast majority of the country absolutely hate Farage and everything he stands for.
Farage caused this 👇 and now Labour are trying to woo Reform voters…..? Well they can fuck right off with that plan!! 😒
The definition of madness is....
You know in the mornings, when these invertebrates do the studio rounds and literally, play a dead bat to every single question, especially if it’s immigration oriented? And then they wonder why they’re polling at the same subterranean level as trump? Try this: pick a side. QED.
Ask the mob how. Then ask them where humane solutions are found not to be possible, are inhumane solutions justified? That will tell us what they are.
I agree Labour should stop pandering to fascists , I don’t want to live in a country that behaves like this. Whatever happened to compassion.
Fuck off with compassion. My daughters and sons BEFORE COMPASSION OF STRANGER5
Since most rapes occur with men who women know on your logic all men should be deported, that would keep all women safe wouldn’t it? I think that all rape is wrong whoever the perpetrator is and whatever skin colour or ethnicity.
How sad that you can only be abusive and not use reasoned argument.
Oh dear.
Oh dear WHAT?
Nazi scum.
All non‐racists know that a vote for reform is a wasted vote. You might as well vote for the Monster Raving Looney Party. 😂🤣😂🤣😂 Thank god, racists will always be in the minority.
Hahahahaha! Reform poll gains? They're 15 points ahead because of the ghouls in the Labour right! Going further and faster to put Reform into power, that's what he's suggesting. Bunch of stubborn old men who can't admit when they've got it wrong.
They’d rather the country burn than admit the left were correct *see also, Gaza
The VERY FIRST RESPONSIBILITY OF ANY UK GOVERNMENT, DEFENCE OF THE UK CITIZEN
Starmer is useless. He’s created a vacuum in politics which Farage is only too happy to fill with bile and hate.
I'm sure eventually Labours message of Farage is a danger but also he's right but vote for us even though we're copying him less clearly will cut through
Ahh yes, the party that won’t say anything about how farage’s racist Brexit destroyed the economy and robbed us of our rights will surely make hay from from fulfilling his next racist fantasy.
Falconer, pal of Tony Blair and appointed by him to ministerial roles and given a peerage, should STFU.
This👍
Labour need to do their bloody job! Stop going after Farage, leave him to it. Focus on making peoples lives better; produce results people can see and feel. Starmer needs to stop jetsetting and focus on the domestic. Get some bloody policies through the Commons.
If the left of Labour and, probably, the disgruntled centre and right of Labour voters abandon it the winners will be Farage and the LibDems.
More Blairite nonsense. After Blunkett, Straw and Blair himself. Relevant in their day. Now extinct.
Yep- all this appeasement takes you no where. But the elephant in the room is Starmer’s charisma - or rather lack of. He could not win the argument, any argument, so Labour’s policy is framed to avoid them.
I’m at a loss to know what Labour stand for other than parroting Deform bollocks
I have always voted labour. And their current behaviour disgusts me. Starmer is absolutely dreadful. What does he think he’s supposed to be doing???
Either a Tory plant or lost his humanity, you choose which one, been a disaster since he became leader of Labour
Most people are disgusted by Reform and everything they stand for. And are sick of the frog faced fascist every where they bloody look
Also sick of Starmer and his team of advisors not calling that fascist out enough
Seems to me they are doing just what he wants, but in a humanitarian way. In reality there is nothing in Tory or Reform policies that would get the hotels closed even this quickly.
I find it nonsensical how the same people who are upset about migration never say anything about their own government's role in creating it. I also find it strange that people on the left seem to ignore that it'd be better if people weren't forced to leave their homes in the first place.
And I reckon those who are partaking in this nonsense that aren't fascist(if there are any I dk the %s tbh) should be engaged with. I think it's a terrible idea to pretend like the misdirected anger towards migrants(while unjustified) isn't partly an expression of a confused but genuine frustration
But fuck whatever Labour's doing obviously.
Call me naive, but similar to prisons, had we started cross-party cooperation years ago, processing asylum claims quickly and building humane accommodation for asylum seekers, we wouldn't be in this mess. (also opening up legal routes - cutting the boats issue at it's knees). These are people.
I WOULD agree with a push to stop using hotels - the Refugee Council are mentioned in the piece as calling for this. But because using hotels for lengthy periods of time is not appropriate, not because those hotels represent "luxury".
Falconer is talking rubbish. There is absolutely no evidence at all that you can "deter" people from making the crossings - if the strong possibility of dying en route is not enough to deter people, then the smaller possibility of being deported to a "third country" is just not going to do so.
Someone adult needs to stand up in this country and shout to all to stop fucking up following muppets like Farage and get cracking with real work because there are lots of things to do. Unbelievable. Wake up Starmer FFS
Falconer’s bestie Tony Blair has just been to a Trump hosted conference about how they will redevelop Gaza. Presumably when every one is dead or moved to prison camps. Don’t expect Falconer to make any sense about anything. Dark side of Hell type of person.
Gaza reconstruction can start when Hamas is gone.
After the genocide?
After the genocide Hamas has perpetuated in Gaza? Yes
It'll just be a target.
Britain has a Labour government? What? I thought a Con spinoff was in charge.
Thing is, it's already a yes but nobody believes it. The problem is not the asylum seekers or the hotels.
100%. As a labour supporter (for now at least), I couldn’t agree more.
Got a leaflet in today for Neil Bibby for Labour for the 2026 election to Holyrood to represent Paisley! He would have Nigel Farage govern Scotland if that's what enough of England votes for. I utterly despise the Labour Branch of the "British" Nationalist Party.
Never learn anything Neo Liberals, don't pander to hate and ignorance, call it out before it becomes the new normal in politics
Those hotels are just another Tory scam, a proper Alan B'Stard plan. We should be able to house them for a fraction of the price.
People protesting outside the hotels don't care that they are in hotels, they care they are here. Knowing the address makes it easier for them to rock up. You'd think Labour would know they are protesting the people being in the UK, not where their bunkbeds are.
How on earth has asylum seeker hotels been permitted to become the number 1 Britlish political issue???
The media
The fascist politicians.
Farage.
Soon Trumps gonna sue Farage for breach of copyright (far).
💯
Mr Falconer - you are being led into an electoral disaster if you pander to Farage and the Right. Populists only make or identify problems. They never solve them and kicking a can down the road is NOT solving a problem.
Utter BS by these pathetic AHs who have over decades put this country up the neo libertarian corrupt fraudulent unregulated capitalism arse run riot thus causing massive issues in society & UK, a disease partly from the US capitalist fraud! You fight fascism & criminality via various 'tools'!
I agree with George Monbiot !
I don't think these people will see sense. Or have the guts to do what's needed.
If only the Conservative governments who caused the arrivals in small boats had processed those claiming asylum quickly, instead of putting them in hotels and other unsuitable accommodation and processing none, or very few, for at least 3 years.
It was deliberate. They manufactured this "crisis" to distract the voting public from their shortcomings i.e. everything they did. It didn't work, it just caused them to haemorrhage votes to Reform
Deliberate policy, also unaffordable NI cuts
And it produced the likes of Jenrick, Patel, Braverman, Badenoch who also spout bigoted, xenophobic nonsense. How do those from migrant families, or migrants themselves, not understand that the minority noisy mob want rid of them as well.
Labour will be irrelevant at the next election, I voted for them last time but so far they have not earned my vote again. I won't vote for 'reform' but if labour thinks they will win supporters by being 'reform lite' then they are deluded.
Reform don't need to win an election to get their policies implemented, just generate enough hype to coerce a weak government into doing it for them. 😡
Reform are the national front Reborn.
So fed up of hearing about this. Labour are utterly hopeless.
If it can't be hotels then I assume they ll build camps ; that always ends well
Er.... Lord Falconer, that ship has sailed.
There are numerous and very well known ways that hotels could be closed, two of which are to provide safe routes, as opposed to no routes at all, and rejoin the EU. Others include processing centres in France and enable some form of work for those in detention so they can pay their way.
We need TV programmes interviewing refugees so they can explain why they are here. We need filming inside the hotels so we can see what kind of food people are eating, what their rooms are like etc. The public is imagining wild luxury because we aren't being shown different information.
A couple of those in Epping were interviewed by local TV. They're now frightened and can't understand how all can be perceived as sexual predators because of one man, when they've mostly been living in the community problem free for many months.
The generalisations are ridiculous. But that's a reason it would be worth us getting to know more refugees as individuals through our screens, just as we already know all men are not predators cos we know nice men too! Might be necessary for people to speak anonymously do you think?
In the interviews I watched one of the asylum seekers remained anonymous. Both spoke good English. The BBC, Sky, ITV and newspapers really need to be interviewing these people and humanising them as opposed to the dehumanising rhetoric which comes from Farage, Lowe, etc and their followers.
Labour should be calling this out for what it is, Racism. Very few people would choose to travel thousands of miles from their family, give thousands to people smugglers only to find themselves stuck in a shitty hotel for years.
“Charlie Falconer, who served as lord chancellor and justice secretary under Tony Blair,…” Yeah…I’m out.
DO NOT COMPLAIN ABOUT #FARAGE ALWAYS BEING ON TV IF YOU HAVEN'T SIGNED THIS PETITION !!! DO IT!!!!! RT and thankyou for your attention to this matter! 😰 petition.parliament.uk/petitions/71...
Labour being too spineless to call out the Fascists because idiot Starmer is afraid to abandon copying them.
maybe afraid for a reason and some voters would reconsider. But I would say so be it. Even more would reconsider in case of this continued sitting on the fence.
Considering Labour are losing more votes on the Left only a complete idiot would support Starmer now.
20% seem to. Labour are consistent in the polls I've seen.
Never underestimate the tenacity of complete idiots.
👏👏👏👏👏
In fairness, the hotels should be unnecessary. There should not be a backlog this big. Now, they've been become a focal point for race-baiting.
That’s the intention. It is disgusting
No where else to put them, not enough social housing, and Farage is exploiting this to his thick fan base, on Sky News yesterday, some old Grandmother of 78 with a cut out of Farage traveling around the country with her stupid little England flag outside Asylum hotels
The Tories deliberately created it with their bill that forced the HS to deport any new arrivals without any mechanism to do so.
Yes, I know. But now it's Labour's problem, and while they are getting the backlog down, their rhetoric is unhelpful.
True. Although after 14 years of the Tories blaming the previous government, it's a bit rich for them to complain.
I detest this Labour government, but expecting them to deal with a 14-year backlog in one year is ridiculous. And where do the asylum seekers go until then. Give them houses? That'll go down well. Holiday camps? How is that better? Let everyone out of prison and put in them there? Great idea. 🙄🫰
The Farageists want them killed.
It’s what political bankruptcy looks like. Being (mis)led by populists and their ugly agendas. Starmer and his government clearly haven’t been placed to serve society. Feels like they’ve been abusing power for 15 years.
Exactly right.
The owners of the hotels will be mad they’ve hit the jackpot if they shut them down
The main responsibility of government is to process asylum claims efficiently. & treat asylum claimants with decent respect until this can be accomplished. I can't see any of this in the BBC reporting or MSM reporting. Reform, Tories, & the current Labour Party do not define the UK's humanity.
You would think that "pander to an extremist party ideological anchor, then having legitimised it offer a watered down ersatz version of their policy" would be an easy concept for an experienced politician to both grasp and then discard as self defeating, but here we are.
Thank you. I didn't know Zarah posted that or said that. She's great.
This was good, you may have seen it links.org.au/zarah-sultan...
Thank you. Appreciated.
George doesn't believe in immigration control so I'd suggest his view is not one of objectivity.
They need to set up safe and legal routes and further speed up assessments for asylum. And, as @zoejardiniere.bsky.social says, they should grant blanket asylum to refugees from certain countries and allow them to work asap. bsky.app/profile/zoej...
It seems to me, that by chasing the ideals of other parties, well far right parties, Labour is demonstrating a lack of initiative, leadership and political direction.
I remember back in the 70s and 80s lots of people and organisations working together including the Labour party fought back against the fascists BNP, NF etc and won. Why aren’t we doing it again ?
Someone commented on Facebook that we should close down the hotels and set up migrant camps. I asked her where she would like them set up, for example a park near her?? No reply yet
Local authorities also use these hotels as homeless hostels. Would they close them if people started demonstrating against the homeless as being anti-social or similar?
I despair.
If Labour wants to enact Reform policies then they should all go and join the fecking Reform party
The spin on what he says is peculiar. As far as I can tell he said Labour should accelerate the programme that removes any need to house asylum seekers in hotels. That makes sense, but framing it as closing them down seems to be attempting to appeal to Farage's dupes. That framing is foolish.
What is with this Labour brain rot going round the whole party? Were they ever serious people?
“If only the Weimar Republic had embraced and adopted the Nazi party’s genocidal plans the Nazi party would not have gained power” - probably said by a man who approved of British illegal invasions into other sovereign nations
Google “von Papen”
Why does the Labour Right run scared of the media? Labour will be criticised *whatever* we do: we should do the right thing and be damned if the headlines are bad. Taxes should be increased and the way we collect them needs massive improvement but we should SELL the benefits.
The entire political-media class from the lowliest nepo-baby intern at the Guardian to Sir Oswald Muesli himself in No 10, seems to have been mobilised to promote Racist Right ideologies. Only a few years ago the same people, at least in public, would have denounced anyone advocating that stuff.
The grounds of the injunction would make it illegal to house victims of domestic violence and their children in hotels....
One has to ask, what is the actual plan here? Assuming we comply with international law, we have to let in refugees and process them. We definitely need a faster and more humane way of doing so, but closing hotels doesn’t help with that.
