This has always been on the long form of the census (which is given to a random selection of census takers). They rotate the example national origins from census to census leading to huge rises and falls in the people who choose that example. But it is new to see it on the NSF reporting form.

Oh, agreed. I think almost all the bizarre things happening at the big agencies are not because of the actual staff. I meant more that I can't see what the point of them even tracking it is, vs understanding why it might be asked on a census or the general social survey.
It is for the same reason I was made to take my pronouns off of my Fed email signature. Some high up person kept getting annoyed at having to take demographic surveys that delineated minority groups but not majoritarian European ones. There is no point except to be "anti-woke".

The really insane thing is that most Usian wypepo aren't really of any specific European lineage and are mutts based on whatever weird ass conception of European national origin as ethnic identity they're using as a basis.
There hasn't really been any large scale migration from Europe since the early 20th century. I had people in my family who were way into genealogy so know one line of lineage arrived in the colonies in the 17th century.
So just based on that there's how many generations of intermarriage over several centuries as to render this the most moronic question I could be asked.
