Man-Wolf! Good times. And that Gil Kane art with Romita Sr inks?! 😶 Classic.

Such a great run!
My next exposure to Spidey was through the Ralph Bakshi cartoon which had come out years early and was in syndication at the time. It started to fill in some holes about who this character was. 🎼Is he strong? Listen bud! He’s got radioactive blood!🎼 #MTGxSpiderMan
Folks take for granted how easy it is to find stuff today but back then comic shops were few and far between. I did not fully appreciate Spider-Man until I got my mitts on a book that reprinted the origin stories of what we now know of as the ubiquitous MCU characters. #MTGxSpiderMan
It was the first time I read Spider-Man’s origin and was utterly devastated by the death of Uncle Ben, who died after Peter failed to intervene is a store holdup. It was a gut punch to read and suddenly, more than ever, I had to find out everything about Peter Parker. #MTGxSpiderMan
There was a fantastic shop that opened in my neighborhood called Here’s a Bookstore that sold back issues of comics. I started going there looking for the next piece of my puzzle. That’s where I found this issue... and another terrible gut punch. #MTGxSpiderMan
I was so happy to nail down a copy of this about three decades ago. IIRC it was part of a trade of Magic cards for comics.
Put in an impossible situation, Peter could not save Gwen Stacy and now she was dead. Never to return to the pages of a Marvel Comic. Ever. Nope. Never coming back. Very sad. #MTGxSpiderMan
I knew what happened to Gwen just from lore, but I’d never seen it on the page. This is devastating. 💙
That "snap" was just brutal and haunted me.
Especially when he’s celebrating up above! 😭
No other character carried the weight that Spider-Man did. The deaths that all drove him to protect not just the people he loved but anyone who was being victimized by bullies and criminals. Uncle Ben's words echo in my #MTGxSpiderMan preview card. “With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility”
That's a fun combination of effects. Makes me want to see a symbiote-themed Eldrazi Conscription on the bonus sheet, but gonna guess that's not happening...
That is kind of perfect though!
I love that they got the full quote right. And not the shorter version most ppl know.
I love the flavor of it. It wants you to give the creature more and more responsibility, despite that making it more of a target. Very Peter Parker
No weight. At least not in mainline spidey. He gave up his own child to protect aunt may. Peter B Parker. That’s the dad who carries the weight.
The Spider-Man I grew up with is the one I am writing about so...
oh i'm in love
This card is very you mechanically.
which spider-man is the one on relentless assault?
That's Miles fighting the Prowler (his uncle)
You took a card preview and made it something greater than the card itself. Well-written (and an interesting card!). Thank you!
Thank you!
I don’t see a world in which I’m permitted to not run this in Uril - esp given that it revolves around Ethereal Armor type effects (of which, this is one), but I have to admit that the inherent risk is making me anxious. moxfield.com/decks/AVKLy3...
The more you pile on the more he can take. It perfectly captures the essence of a character I have been obsessed with going back all the way to that long-ago trip to the barber shop. A character in an endless battle to protect both the city and his loved ones. #MTGxSpiderman
What a great story! And a great card that's going straight into Light Paws!
I also have a bonus #MTGxSpiderMan preview card which is fittingly from the Bonus Sheet and is a new version of Relentless Assault -- a perfect summary of Spider-Man's everyday life. I have already booked my #MTGxSpiderMan prerelease for Sept 20th -- a perfect collision of all my obsessions.
ooh this looks exciting
I will be at Magic Con Atlanta that following weekend and you know my Commander and Cocktails Boxing League deck is going to packing as many Spidey cards as I can cram into it. I also have a special offering on the beverage menu... #MTGxSpiderMan /End 🕸️
Delightful thread, BDM. I'm so glad this set is resonating with you :)
Great design
Side note: That is a great store name.
Last time I visited the old neighborhood they were still there!!
