All these are jokes, I get it. And a single joke in an unobtrusive place can really improve a story. But it will never replace the story, no matter how many beach episodes, fandom jokes and Deadpool knockoffs you cram into your writing.

We know we're all just products of our influences so it stands to reason that an age of media that has a mainstream fear of earnestness will produce writers deathly dependent on lampshading.
