We'll see if it holds, but right now, the re-release of JAWS is on track to gross nearly $10M over the four-day weekend, coming it at No. 2 and beating two new releases (including a remake of an 80s film.) If that's not an argument for well-curated nostalgia programming, I don't know what is.

They're trailering the Apollo 13 and Back to the Future Imax re-releases before Jaws this weekend.

And kudos to NBCUniversal, which has been all over the JAWS 50 milestone. It aired the movie on NBC, with a Spielberg intro; put it on Peacock *and* sold it to other streamers; built a vertical on Peacock with all the Jaws movies; did a new 4K video release; and teamed with MLB for in-stadium promos

It's easy to be cynical about "synergy" because it's so often just code for lazy use of vertical integration (like when Paramount puts random Paramount-owned stuff on one of its cable channels, even if it's not on brand, because it's cheap.) But this? This is good. More of this.

My local cineplex is only offering Jaws in 3-D (which I understand is amazing) for one showing each day at 1:20p - which does not work for me. Ended up seeing it in XD on a very large screen and was very pleased. Theater was 90% full

They are even showing it at the local drive-in (double feature with Twisters). I hope this leads to studios realizing that people love re-releases and will put their butts in seats to see things on the big screen when the movie merits it

The pandemic was the perfect excuse to experiment with more drive-ins, but: nope.

Oddly enough there are several drive-ins in NE PA and evirons. Most do revivals (one does current/close but always does double features) and theme weekends and even camping. This one did so well they are opening a brick-and-mortar for the cold season: www.mahoningdit.com
