I think there's been a constant attempt over the last 20 years to undermine Alan Moore's place as a writer in comics history, and the constant negging of Watchmen is a part of that. And unfortunately a lot of the root of it is because Moore took his ball and went home.

As creators decrease output over time (whether by choice or corporate blocks), the "new" creators get more spotlight and take away some shine. Over time, we can see more flaws in a work. For me, his Swamp Thing run was near flawless. I think his main skill is adapting/revamping existing characters.

I agree. I can’t prove it, obviously, but I feel like there has been an Anti-Moore social media campaign (backed up by Warner/DC) to make him look like a grumper who’s scolded you for playing with toys instead of doing your homework.

Maybe after he passes we will see the love for his work that it used to get?

I think his run on Supreme being super unavailable hurts a lot too, as much like his stuff at ABC, it really shows his love of classic superhero tropes.
