I would give someone wanting to get into comics a manga because they're going to be a lot more fulfilled in the long run with a lot more reading options than if they make the mistake of getting into American Big Two comics.

getting with started with manga or euro/french comics and then seeking out the best of cape stuff later is the way to go

The trick is to start them on indie comics if you want to avoid them getting into the Big 2 first. A little bit of The Many Deaths of Laila Starr will go a long way
