It may be a transactional thing. They think they are going to get better ego stroking from the robot than they will from people. Or maybe the novelty effect, they have lost any respect for people that they may have had, but this is shiny new.
I'm the opposite. I refuse to be polite to pieces of metal and plastic, and I'm mostly polite to other people (unless you've been an ass to me/others). We were in a meeting about "how to use AI" (me: NOPE) and the instructor said "Don't forget to say please" and I loudly laughed in response.
