I'd never insist that anyone happy making rice on the stovetop get a rice cooker. But when someone starts out asking how to cook rice, I will definitely recommend getting a rice cooker.

Perry is one of those authors I’ve read at least a dozen books by. And I’ve enjoyed each of them.

Thomas Perry, one of the greatest thriller writers of the past four decades, has died, per his publisher, The Mysterious Press:

The Mysterious Press is sad to report the passing of Thomas Perry, who died suddenly on Monday, September 15, as reported by his wife, Jo Perry. Our hearts go out to her, their two children, and all his family. Tom was a bestselling thriller writer who was beloved by all who knew and worked with him and was part of the Mysterious Press family for a quarter of a century. His first book, The Butcher’s Boy, won the Edgar Allan Poe award in 1983. He launched his popular and critically acclaimed series about Jane Whitefield in 1995 with Vanishing Act, chosen as one of the The author of 31 novels, he has received numerous awards, including the Barry for Best Thriller of the Year for Hero earlier this month. Many of his books have been acquired by Hollywood studios, most recently The Old Man, a limited run television series starring Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow which premiered on FX on June 16, 2022; a second series made its debut on September 12, 2024. His novel Strip has completed filming as Bear Country, starring Russell Crowe. Otto Penzler, who published Perry for 25 years, spoke for all those at the Mysterious Press who worked with him, especially Luisa Cruz Smith, his editor for the past four books, stating, “Tom was not only one of the most distinguished writers of crime fiction for more than four decades, he was an unfailingly kind and thoughtful gentlemen that it was a joy and honor to know. We all will miss him, as will his countless fans in all parts of the world.”

First Reformed: Turns out when a lot of people say a movie is pretty great it's often pretty great. Best Ethan Hawke performance?

Twelve Monkeys: Hadn't seen it since the mid-'90s, and turns out I don't care for it as much as I remember.

First revisit of There Will Be Blood since it came out, and I think it's very good without hitting greatness. (Favorite PTA firmly established as Phantom Thread.)

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning: excellent character study, from that brief window when Albert Finney was playing young men.

Another RIP Terence Stamp viewing: The Hit. Hat tip to @scotttobias.bsky.social for recommending it on @thereveal.bsky.social.

This is scary but I'm taking The Film Maven off Substack and have transferred to Ghost. Not only does this give me complete ownership of my work, but also means I won't continue to lose money to Substack and Apple. I lay everything out for Subscribers here. thefilmmaven.substack.com/p/the-film-m...

One of my favorite details this time through: one of the scientists busy jamming with the aliens at the end wondering what is actually being communicated. The meaning isn’t important. The vibe is all.

Saw Close Encounters on 70mm today. I’m just old enough to remember when this was about as popular as Star Wars, and it seemed like maybe there could be room for weird personal one-off sci-fi movies in the culture. This means something.
