@hfxgov.bsky.social why isn't "blocking bike lanes" one if the selection in the " 'alleged' violation" of the form, and why wouldn't this be a DISPATCH case? cc. @lecwhite.bsky.social www.halifax.ca/home/online-...

Please 311 this reporting form concern. Parking Compliance does ticket for this, if my memory serves me well.
Thanks Laura! I was in a rush to pick up my child from camp so didn’t have time to report then, and I figured by the time I did have time everyone there would be long gone. I’ll 311 it now just to put this pattern on the record, though, as it’s a very common issue in this spot.
I come through there doing the end of day pickup year round and I never ride in the bike lane going past the SUB. Even when it does look clear chances are good that some one will just pull in and block you as you approach.
Yeah, that patch is especially bad, as are the bits next to the Rowe bldg, and in front of the Arts Centre. The pavement is also weirdly bumpy closer to Robie, to the point that I ride on the paint rather than in the lane along there. They’re just terrible bike lanes by every metric.
Last time I 311'd a car parked in a bike lane, the operator said they would send someone down there within 2-3 days to see if it's still there, lol
The response using the online form tends to be a lot faster, but they haven’t included “parked in a bike lane” as an option in the updated dropdown menu. www.halifax.ca/home/online-...
I didn’t see “parked on the sidewalk” the last time I tried to report either.
Heck, that could be condensed into one option if it requires the same equipment to handle. Unless they'd be using these drop-downs to do statistics on occurrence rate because the relevant people they (theoretically) direct it to don't see any reason to keep accessible and trustworthy records.
I think the only “equipment” that handles it is a bylaw officer with a ticket. They don’t even tow when a car is parked at a fire hydrant.
i would hope something like "in accessible parking spot" would get a higher priority. The issue is that the main action is "Send someone to ticket". Last winter this car was over a week in Accessible parking at the Gardens gate. They got 3-4 tickets, but spot was still being blocked.
i remember this woman down my street who had someone blocking her parking exit. Enforcement came, ticketed, but that was it. She was in tears as she needed to get out, but "calling a tow" was not part of the enforcement
I was once trapped out of my basement flat by someone parked in the narrow driveway, blocking the door. Police non-emerg ticketed & I hung out at the library until the owner eventually moved the car. The only time I have seen a tow truck is for the no parking zones on Quinpool Rd during rush hour.
yikes, that's awful. i have also seen tow trucks for the Gottingen reserved bus lanes, and the Trollope 100s express series buses afternoon holding area (which for the life of me i can't figure why that wasn't integrated with the Hospital Parkade project)
🤯
which means it will be under "other" which doesn't get immediate "Dispatch" note
I’d probably get creative with my dropdown choices, then!
I'm surprised that there's no "Blocking traffic (DISPATCH)" option
Staff are now considering giving the form a refresh. Thx for pointing out the gaps.
Ahh something I’ve been meaning to 311 about is that at least for the phone number field it’s impossible to get it accepted in Safari on iOS. Also it rejects uploaded iOS photos because they end in jpeg and not jpg. Would highly recommend they test on mobile.
Great to hear - thanks for following up!
Yeah, I called 311 so many times about the contractor who was renovating The Last Word bookstore on Windsor and parked in the bike lane all day. I can’t imagine he ever got a ticket since he didn’t change it up at all.
i've seen contractor getting tickets and it didn't change behaviour, this was a part of business model same as Amazon
Charming
They will very likely blithely pass the cost of the fine on to the client, as I was informed during our kitchen reno. We had to move our own car off the premises so the contractor could have parking, or pay for their parking tickets, that was the choice
Wow. Delightful.
This tells me we should tow those parked in bike lanes.
which shows that it's not a "Dispatch" call, like blocking a driveway, which i've seen get one hour attention. so we need change from inside and contacting 311 will not do anything
