Open the document again in Word, but don't touch it or change anything, then try File/ Info/ Manage Document/ Recover Unsaved Documents ... see what is there.

Ah - sorry, can't help with that! I know the MS Office apps are slightly different - sadly the Mac versions often fall a bit short on features, so not sure what's available. The Mac OS is normally better than Windows, though, so may be something there! Best of luck ...
