On Reddit, I saw a P&S fan decry HB for "rel[ying] too much on shock humor" and claim that the characters in P&S were better developed. I have genuinely no idea how someone who enjoys P&S can take offense to the shock humor in HB or think the latter's characters are shallower.

For a while, I tried to give people who complained about the Hellaverse the benefit of the doubt. Even if my first instinct was that they were speaking from a place of homophobia, I shouldn't be convinced that they were, right? Now I think I was being too nice.

Comparing HB's characters and humor unfavorably to P&S's makes very little sense unless you consider that the sexual themes in HB are mostly gay and those in P&S are mostly straight. (Some P&S fans also like to see themselves in the male love interest, and HB doesn't offer an analogous opportunity.)

That user's take was baffling. I have to imagine they were talking about the late-blooming romance between Panty and Brief, both because the series has almost no other tender moments and because heterosexual male viewers can insert themselves mentally into the situation.

(I haven't seen the new season yet. Maybe it has scenes of great emotional depth, though based on the fan responses I've read, I doubt it.)

Not quite there yet, although there was a hint of possibly something of the sorts in the latest episode, but I'll let you come to your own conclusions on that.

Once the season has finished its release, I'll have to see what you mean. Seriously, for all its wild, chaotic, offensive comedy, HB has plenty of gravitas. P&S rarely even tries, and that's clearly deliberate. The shows aren't attempting to give the same experience.

For sure. One is more of a dramedy and the other is more an action comedy. Though they are similar in some ways, they're also very different in others. The intent for each is very different at their core.

So as far as I am aware, that universe and the Hellaverse are on a similar boat when it comes to their reputations

I grew up without social media and I only just started using it. I see young people really upset over it. Your self worth is not defined by likes/views by strangers on the internet. How you think of yourself is important. Also you don't have to share every thought with the entire world either.

After some point, the weird hateboner some people have for the show has gotten far more annoying than the show ever could've been to me. (I like the Hellaverse tho, don't get me wrong.)

People getting bullied for finding joy in something they like, is honestly one of the most pettiest and pathetic things a person can do. People should be allowed to have the right and freedom to find joy in a piece of media they enjoy without being and feeling targeted for said media!

I heard something interesting once that in criminal or hostage situations, telling the person your name and maybe something about you (parents, siblings etc) sometimes makes them less likely to hurt you. Same principle I guess; they don't see the human when spewing their hatred.

This is just what's become of the internet in present day. Especially places like Twitter and Reddit where they gather as hate mongers. Like what Mike Tyson said, that social media made people way too comfortable disrespecting others and not getting punched in the face for it.

I will never understand those people. It's like why do you care what someone else chooses to like or not like show wise. Some people just have no life that's all it is petty and sad. There are people who talk about shows that I can't stand and I don't say a word because... It's none of my business.

It’s so heartbreaking. There’s really no reason for such hate to others, even if it’s not something you like/something you hate. Your shows have brought so much joy. Why people want to destroy joy is beyond me.

The craziest thing about this is that the people who engage in this shit (especially young artists) are just contributing to an environment that they will inevitably fall victim to when people eventually get bored of going after hellaverse and need fresh blood :/

I just wish these folks would go join the alt right contingent of fandom already so we could just exile them.
