Coming from a backward religious family as I do, I think it's more that they genuinely believe everyone not like them is going to Hell to burn in a lake of fire forever and they also believe that if they've not "warned" everyone around them that they deem to be evil about this that they'll get in
It's a mental health issue, if we're going to be technical about it. There's a very very thin line between faith and delusion.

father's congregation. He wasn't an extreme Biblical literalist in that way. He was a bigot in a lot of ways, but not to the level of their misogyny we see now exactly.
Fortunately, I grew up before the whole scary evangelical thing started, as far as I know, but my late father was a preacher. I didn't have to see/experience people being forced to sign actual contracts, but the whole submission thing was there. The haircutting thing, however, was not in my
