Oh, they /absolutely/ did. I have read similar sentences about weird individuals that occurred in the 90's or earlier, let alone 15 years ago in 2010. That it's appearing in the New York Times seems to be what's new.

Yeah, to be fair, I was making a lazy joke. This veiled, sort of dismissive way of embarrassing people has been around for ever. Mainly it's the weird combination of words that seem to be intensifying.
