I'm not optimistic, the backlash has included rejecting attempts to avoid transmitting other infections as well. A lot of missteps during the early pandemic were due to arrogant leadership being unwilling to listen to domain-specific experts.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
You probably know this, but they absolutely were not. They were positively indignant at the thought of doing *anything* to prevent kids from getting or transmitting Covid. Some of them even wanted as many kids to get Covid as soon as possible.

Also, there have been plenty of right-wing creeps who've preyed on boys, including in the context of sports. They're louder about girls' sports because it appeals to more people.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
No, they're also enthusiastic about "protecting girls" by preventing trans boys from playing sports and by preventing cis girls from playing on boys' teams (common practice when there aren't girls' teams for that sport in the area).

It would be unfair to blame everyone who's stuck moving today/this weekend for all of the inconvenience so instead we rubberneck and laugh at people who've Storrowed a truck despite numerous warnings.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
The people laughing at it have also experienced rental trucks being driven the wrong way down a one-way street, sidewalks blocked by all the things people have tossed out at the last minute when moving, and more.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
You have to go past and ignore a bunch of signs warning you to not take vehicles over a certain height that way, and at least in Boston it usually happens during a time when all the people moving are an inconvenience for everyone else and each other.

Yeah, I read that the behavior of people who use this drug for tanning purposes (really excessive amounts of UV exposure outdoors and in tanning beds) makes it hard to get any idea of whether it could have contributed to them developing melanoma.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm still kind of amazed he takes something to cause tanning without sun exposure given how enthusiastic he is about raw-dogging UV exposure. You'd think he'd want to achieve that leathery glow the natural way. 🙃

Third Way is a centrist Democratic think tank, detractors frequently describe it as 'neoliberal'. They always have the same advice: tack to the center and use language that appeals to "both sides". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_W...
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
Some of the terms in the Third Way report *are* plain language, they're just plain language about ideas and people Third Way doesn't want to hear about or from.

Other shitty things include going on the modern equivalent of Rush Limbaugh's talk show and making a fool of himself by enthusiastically agreeing with the Republicans' current favorite topics to whip up furor. He's not meeting people in the middle, he's being led around by the nose by Chris Rufo.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent

And many Dem governors have been doing more than Newsom, he's just very loud.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
Newsom doesn't have as much power over redistricting as Abbott does in TX Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, and New York are other blue states considering redistricting. Newsom is just the loudest about calling it retaliatory gerrymandering.

Mortification that someone moved to Iceland for that reason /probably/ didn't play a role in making decisions about how many refugees to admit, but you never know.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
A while ago I saw a mention of a Brit who moved to Iceland for that reason. Iceland has since admitted an unusually large number of refugees relative to its population size for a European country (which admittedly is a pretty low bar).

S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
Lang was Altman's PhD advisor, that would make sense. He visited campus while I was a student and gave two talks, one on math and one on troublemaking. My roommate and I created and distributed bingo sheets for the latter.

The problem is that physics majors aren't the only people who have to take differential equations, you also have chemistry majors, potentially some econ and biology majors, and various engineering majors if you're somewhere with engineering programs.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
What engineering discipline has fluid mechanics courses for undergrads? As far as I can tell, physics departments usually don't even bother trying to teach fluid mechanics to undergrads?
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
I took it twice in order to pass it. The second time I had a professor who tried to include applications but was unfamiliar with common conventions in physics including what units are used, so it was confusing and frustrating for everyone. I think the chemistry majors would have said the same.

Organic chemistry and any kind of statistics at all are the classes I most often regret not taking in college.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
I did really wish there was a physics-specific differential equations course, something I'm pretty sure the math professors also wished for (along with major-specific courses for other majors that required diff eq and not taught by math faculty).
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
👀 Neither of the colleges I went to had that class, they did a combination of teaching relevant math in physics courses and requiring math courses as pre-reqs for physics courses, which is how I ended up with a minor in math.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
It is amazingly enough still running, I feel very sorry for anyone trans who stumbles upon it early on in looking for information.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
My professors were far more polite, but perhaps that was because the department had a shortage of physics majors.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
Did you take calculus at the Rock? If you haven't already encountered it, I emphatically disrecommend Serge Lang's _A first course in calculus_ which was the textbook used for Calculus I and II.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
I first learned calculus in AP Physics with a similar approach, it was great! I did take a more "traditionally" taught sequence of calculus courses my first year of college. My college physics professors often prefaced math explanations with an apology to math majors in the room.

There are many criticisms to be made of white abolitionists and British anti-slavery policy, but the British Navy was in fact at one point actively interfering with slave trading by (among others) white Americans. Hardly something you can use coherently as a defense of white Americans.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
Black former slaves were an integral part of the British movements to ban the slave trade and eventually slavery in the British empire and in countries the UK had influence over. Also, uh, colonial landowners in the future US were a major part of the opposition to the ban of the slave trade.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
Good grief, this seems to be a seriously garbled version of the traditional (itself somewhat garbled, questionable, and self-serving) British defense against responsibility for slavery.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
Thank you, I wondered about that but was far more certain about Spanish colonizers enslaving American Indians and indigenous people of the Caribbean.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
There were numerous slave revolts in the early US and the area that became the early US. White people were terrified by the possibility of them! US policy towards American Indians was profoundly shaped by a desire to prevent cooperation between American Indian communities and escaped Black people.

Yeah, I know about vat pasteurization because it's better for making cheese. Raw milk advocates talking about vat pasteurization as the lesser evil is new to me.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
A lot of organic (US equivalent to bio) milk is ultra-pasteurized for logistical reasons, so many people who try raw milk are comparing it to homogenized ultra-pasteurized milk.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
Not sure if you use the same terminology as the US, in case you don't: vat pasteurization is 63 ºC for 30 minutes, flash pasteurization is 72 ºC for 15 seconds, ultra-pasteurization is 138 ºC for 2 seconds.
S (@miriparhelion.bsky.social) reply parent
If you're talking about vat pasteurization versus flash pasteurization, you can get vat pasteurized milk in the US. I really think the people who say that raw milk tastes better should try drinking non-homogenized vat pasteurized milk.
