All of Canada is applauding
I decided to use Bluesky again earlier today, finally saw your video in my sub feed, and here we are. Sometimes the clouds we yell at are mushroom clouds.
For me personally, I miss RSS feeds. When I was a teenager, I had a bunch of webcomics, blogs, etc. that I followed via RSS and it was really easy to keep track of everything. Then Google Reader shut down and I wasn't able to find something else that met my needs, so I got out of practice -_-
Like, you get the automatic updates of social media but you're in total control of what you see. It was great.
I remember getting the flipboard app which was a fancy RSS reader with fancy animations. This was back in the day of jailbreaking iPhones and *everything* was manually customized. I do miss those days.
I've been using Feedly since then, it's filled that old reader gap
must be nice to be right for all the right reasons! ♥️♥️♥️
You put into words what a lot of older netizens are feeling.
Also, I never even thought about how that 'lets see what we can search for' was a 'skill' in the first place. Its just how we were taught to use search engines in school. Be broad at first then include as many details as you can to narrow it down once you get an inkling of what you're looking for.
Just out of curiosity, what is the like/dislike ratio for your other videos (ie rants about Christmas lights or heat pumps)
Sign of an echo chamber I'm afraid
People must really like radio vacuum tubes!
I loved the video (as always) but I was so genuinely shocked when you showed the statistics about the subscriptions section. I'm totally guilty of "algorithmic complacency" on other sites, but I've always used YT subscriptions as my default. Weird.
Social media algorithms are the smoking problem of our generation imo. Pervasive, addicting, and driven by an entrenched industry. Of course people just want to find a shortcut to the time it takes to actually being informed/social so “The Feed” does that for you. For free! The cost? Fidelity.
Great and useful work
I thought it was really good, and honestly I hope more people come to have the same realizations you do and move away from the current system of "ads first, experience second"
I only have 1 critique of your content. Not enough bloopers!
I hate algorithms and I'm a software engineer. I use my YT subscription feed every day and even pruned my feed to remove anything news-based (including late-night talk shows). If it wasn't for family I would leave FB. If I didn't run my own business and a non-profit I'd leave Twitter.
If you don't already, FBPurity on desktop makes Facebook actually usable again! ... Well sort of.Ffor me it actually revealed that in a given week only about 4 real life people in my friends list actually post a real life thought. The rest is all algo fluff.
You made me made an account on here, because to be fair, i kinda miss the old twitter.. also, Amen. And thanks for making me realize it's not a me problem that the internet of today is or feels ... well... 'broken'?...
The dislikes are bots, clearly. 😛
that's cuz most of us (ur viewers) are old men that yells at clouds
In a way, modern video algos are just hyper-customized tv channels (but without all pf the community arising from shared experience).
Happy that the algorithm led me to find you, but happy I continued to dive into your videos on my own to find out more. Cheers on another successful and enlightening video!
A relevant and meaningful post. Thank you for elucidating so well what most of us know/suspect but weren’t familiar with how it’s done. This is incredibly important for parents and teens. Every student needs to watch your video and empower themself for life. No more mindless scrolling.
What's normal?
As I commented on the video, although I don't like/ use social media platforms that are solely based on "for you" algorithms, YtmT was an exception. I never really used the subs tab, but since your video I started using it and am very happy. Thanks for reminding me of it's existence
And for those who do not want to use it, I'd recommend doing what I did and really use the "don't recommend this content/ channel" option on the recommended tab. Really helped me filtrate things out.
I only wished I could up vote twice when you mentioned the Canada thing, so I did the next best thing, a super thanks
Honestly, thank you for the video, got me to finally clear out the accumulated junk in my subscriptions and sub to some stuff i already watch regularly :3
Sidenote: you're my favorite old man yelling at clouds. Which says a lot, because I think you're a little younger than me.
I thought your video was a great way to spread awareness, and I was very keen to make some changes in my routine after watching. I wonder if folks who are deeply embedded in the complacency will be motivated by it or not.
I do think most everyone except for the youngest internet users have nostagia for the days of forums and solely chronological social media
The way that damn-near-unsearchable algorithm-driven social media has replaced forums that were excellent repositories of knowledge is goddamn infuriating.
Yessssss Facebook was dead to me the day chronological feed died....
I don't think it's just nostalgia but a legitimate fear that the direction we are headed in has some serious existential level dangers for our species. That sounds dramatic and very much old man get off my lawn complaigning, don't like this new fangled way of doing stuff it scares me. But...
But i think we have some legitimate reasons to be scared!
I just hate that I missed out tbh but also realized I would have not vibes with em
Like ultimately im a women of many many different interest and the inability to act normal i would have been prime lolcow material if i wasn’t getting lost into the the ether
I mean, Discord and forums are not *that* different in function
Discord has its own problems. Yeah, you don't get as much random bystander running up and throwing shit and it is very transient. a give and take. By and by, is there any discords that aren't just a fan club about something?
The transciency is my big problem with Discord. It's the evolution of chat rooms hybridized with voice chat programs, not forums, but people treat them as such. While forums can serve as repositories of knowledge, Discord is a disconnected series of walled gardens filled with hedge mazes.
This. All topics mixed together in one channel, rather than separated out into dedicated threads. Search takes you to a point in time and leaves you to trawl for any relevant responses... rather than finding a self-contained thread and being able to parse it in relatively short order.
And that's if you use the right search term in the first place. If you know which channel to search in, and even have access to the right channel due to role shenanigans. The hedge mazes are grown upon sinkholes. This metaphor could be continued tenfold and that would still be understatement.
That was what was magical about forums though; they were so decentralized that there was minimal social risk putting yourself out there. It wasn't like socmed today; there was no personal identity or brand that was more important than the topic, so there was way less incentive to gain "clout"-
Especially by picking on or bullying people (the fact that you were this deep on the Internet at all was already a level of weird that meant you were all on a similar level). It was way more time intensive to track down every little thing a person had ever said to judge them; you really only had-
Your personal interactions to go off of. Of course that had it's own problems, but the risk and fear of public shaming is something very particular to the social media that caters to the attention economy, and forums were structurally resistant to that.
if you are ruled by the likes and the dislikes.. you are ruled by the AI/Algorithm that decides who sees you posts..
It was honestly an incredible video, and something I've ranted about with friends countless times. I remember taking a "Library Research" class in college in 2005 and feeling like I was unlocking a new world, because a chuck of it was how to best use search engines.
I can't count the number of times I've angrily grumbled at my friend for "ruining my feed" because he'd send me some dumb Tiktok video ripped to Instagram that would ruin my currated feed of hockey drills and whatever other random things I actually wanted to see.
I guess I'm also one of the 3% psychopaths that live almost exclusively in their subscription feed.
I just joined this platform thanks to your vid. Cheers.
Thank you for making that video. I've shared it to multiple people and hope it can help out. I fear a really dangerous future here especially in the USA, as social media magnates are actually now involved in running the country itself. If they can automate all that we see, they run the world
A techno-hermit here. I think it was pretty on the nose. Be proud of your work. I avoid technology that I can't personally have exact control of what goes in and out. Otherwise, I'm using it wrong on purpose by installing plugins that block both "features" and my ability to scroll.
Hey I use the Subscriptions feed! I'm not nobody! There's dozens of us, I swear!
I was also surprised by that statistic! I check subscriptions before opening anything on the front page (and after watching bootleg Jeopardy).
glad to find you here, mate. I second your opinion in the last video completely.
I just watched it and genuinely thought it was a good video. Thanks for putting to words some of the same thoughts I've had.
Complacently smooth jazz.
So I love learning about the old internet And I know a channel that you may like too. It's called Nation Squid And I just found your video very fascinating, I have to admit.
I totally relate to this new video. Thank you!
guess what, i created an account in BlueSky after that video 😂. Very interesting and concerning. It is so easy to let others take control over us!
I think more content creators should encourage people to open up subscriptions and look at them. Weirdly enough I discovered one Maker I followed descended into videos about unschooling :/….
Great video, btw I wonder if the perception is caused by our bias, and the number of people that only consume mídia passively is actually decreasing. Maybe most of those people 20 years ago had no access/interest in computers/technology at all, but today are forced to use it.
This was a very important video
Great vid Alec. I loved the closing lines.
I am a very conservative "like"r on YouTube because I use it as a history of genuinely enjoyable videos that I could see myself watching again in the future. Your video easily made that list.
I love how you get so much bullshit on social media then drop a 500k video that everyone likes. Just for perspective. Almost like people get super judgy and argumentative on these apps.
The biggest mistake someone can make is thinking bsky is the "normal people" version of twitter. No, this site is just as full of way-too-online petty extremists looking for things to complain about, they're just a different flavor from the ones on twitter.
It's like having the space to express complete thoughts, with intonation and body language to boot, might be a good thing for effective communication!
I know it's a different form of presentation vs video, but I would que up so early to see a live panel of yours at a convention. Especially at Dragon Con. Doesn't matter what the topic is you always make it interesting.
i find the "containment" thing to be interesting since it doesnt seem to happen to videos. At least not as much.
If you sort YouTube comments by 'recent' you can find awful hateful comments on virtually any video, but downvotes do seem to keep those comments to the bottom of the comment section where you'll never find them. That's partly why I disabled notifications for new comments on my videos.
Don't forget smooth jazz!
That exit song is like a warm hug.
Alec, don't you think that also how microblogging (BlueSky, Mastodon, etc) works is also problematic? I've been here for a few months, and I feel the communication is extremely hard, and the arguments huge. Not only that people find your posts in Discover without context, but more.
I think as much as it is the responsibility of the writer to effectively transmit their message, the reader should grant leeway to their interpretation. Regardless of length, there's always room for misunderstanding unless assuming 2 truth-seeking parties. It's *new* kind of skill we need to learn.
i'm pretty sure he at least mentions it with the part about context collapse - he talks about how people outside of his usual subscribers on bluesky sometimes act like bots. feels that problem more coming from "every comment a tweet" structure tho, but that feels irrelevant to the videos point.
I agree entirely with the video, and Alec's comment. My reply was just an *additional* concern. I see that limiting replies to followers only is helpful, but not enough to solve the issues. I think the problem is that microblogging has still some limits that are hard if not impossible to fix.
for once... its not that deep. the issue is mostly people are terrible at writing or reading but if you talk to them they get it. college is literally just a person reading the book. 95% of humans are listening biased comprehending types. they need "to be talked to". thats the whole thing.
Comments on Reddit/Lemmy are not usually *that* long on average, but the brevity here forces you to lack nuance, omit context and sources etc. But what it's worse, is that you can't post to a community. You post alone, to the whole network at once!
I mainly use a mix of reddit and tumblr and trying to post anything here has been so annoying because I keep running face first into the word limit even when I didn't think what I was saying was running That long
I think when people can downvote a comment, and the community sinks wrong/inappropriate comments, it has quite a beneficial effect. People feel less "alone" vs the wide world. Plus, there can be moderators who can outright remove bots or offtopic content. And ban trolls.
Here people create lists of people they want to block, and often people end up on those lists for no good reason at all. In years of being on Reddit, I've only been banned from an antivaxxer group to which I tried to push back. Here? Tons of "bans". bsky.app/profile/robb...
It's not really up to any individual to criticize why someone else blocks someone. If they don't want to see someone's views on a particular platform they spend time on, they don't have to, and are not any less respectable for exercising that personal decision.
block lists are literally insane authoritarian dumbshit. but you do you kang.
Like, if I block people at all, I'm authoritarian? I'm not seeing the connection you're making, sounds like alarmism.
yes i hate waffles
I know, but blocking has more consequences than just not seeing someone's replies. However, my main concern is that blocking gives no recourse at all for clarification, apology, etc. It's a very final decision. And yet people create lists where masses or people are added without much reason.
I'm not saying that blocking is entirely wrong, or that lists are entirely wrong. I don't know how often the good uses match the bad ones. I'm just concerned about the bad ones. I see no solution good solution, however, other than to make communities, like in Reddit, Lemmy, etc. Which it's not great
Depends on what you want out of your time on the platform I guess. You can have your ideas challenged anywhere you go in life. And it will be. there may be times when I don't want to be inundated with aggressive people that stress me out and don't add any value. I don't have to listen to them.
IMHO, blocking because of completely opposing views, or for shitty opinions, is dumb. It shows no maturity whatsoever and forces you into a echo chamber. I only block accounts who are constantly annoying me or just being an asshole. And even then I'll unblock a few years later if they've changed.
There's a difference between blocking someone for opposing views and blocking someone who's just here to troll and upset people. Like, if someone is seeking out accounts with a 🏳️⚧️ in their name line and spamming transphobic memes at them, they're going on the block list on principle.
Comminating over text feels dehumanizing to me, like writing something in a journal instead of talking. Just adding that human interaction adds a whole other layer of processing to a conversation. I feel it makes it a conversation and not just reacting to written text. Hope I explained that well.
I was glued. Bravo.
Very good video Alec. The final line of “I want to think for myself, I think you should too.” was only amplified by the ad I was served after the cut:
I actually really like AI tools like this for going through legal type things, because I can have it summarize something, and then have it tell me “now what page is this info on?” and then go read that specific part instead of having to crawl through the whole document.
Ai tools that are known to hallucinate and make shit up on the regular over learning the skills nessecary to make an informed decision? Not being able to use a simple find gui/command to find a word in a document? It's laziness convenience over learning to knowledge needed
Frequently these are not things you can ctrl+f for, you require more context than a single or a couple of exact words
Yup. Ctrl-f is great until wha you’re looking for is shrouded in legalese and there’s some obscure word for the thing you’re looking for.
So learn the correct word by reading and the search it. Jesus it isn't that hard
Wanted to chime in with this thought: One issue I have with using AI tools for discovery in legal contexts is that through asking the tool to find something which supports X, you're priming yourself to believe that whatever it returns actually supports X when it might not actually be.
Hey! I watched your video! I do not use LLMs for looking through legal documents, I commented because I do use them to look through lengthy technical docs. You can formulate your queries in neutral ways, and some stuff just is in the document or not!
Correct, but what you are able to do here which not everyone can is understand what the consequences are if the AI tool makes a mistake. You recognize that the context of looking through a technical document has very different stakes from looking through a legal document. Not everyone can do this!
In some senses this gives me comfort because before long the usefulness of these AI tools will probably be revealed as "faster search" which still requires fervent human supervision. But right now people don't imagine it that way, which is a serious problem
One of the issues with only looking for certain things in a document is that you may very well miss important exposition and context which clarifies what the AI tools found. Now, is that new? Not exactly, and I grant that. But man it feels like it would make context misfires happen much more often.
That’s a good point!
"Which section talks about xyz?" Is pretty useful when the index is shit
It's a grep command...
So search for multiple words over being lazy. Dunno what point you thought you were making
AI has a place. This, or another set of eyes for code review. Another good one is to review a document for confusing language. You don't need to accept it's suggestions, but it will often find stuff people miss.
both you and the other reply are astonishingly ironic examples of context collapse, which was discussed at length in the video that this thread is about.
It isn't any more than your post. Local context matters, it's why threads in conversations exist. If this was a flat system like Twitter, this would apply. In your strict definition, when anyone posts something wrong like your original post, nobody should post corrections.
Did I say that AI is entirely useless in every situation, always no matter what? You chiming to say “but actually AI can be valuable for x application” completely ignores the context in which I brought up the ad for an AI service, and why it was a jarring to see at the end of the video.
We were telling you it wasn't the same. It's not taking choice. Not all AI / algorithm / recommendation systems take choices or cause what the video was about. Most "Ai" is a modern Clippy at this point.
Again, I did not make that claim. The juxtaposition remains even with the info you presented. But since you brought it up, an AI telling you where to look, reduces the chances of you considering things it does not point you to, and in many contexts that could be considered taking away choice.
As a 43 year old techie this video really spoke to me. Thank you. It's also the reason I'm now using this bluesky platform. I don't Twitter or Facebook or anything similar but I'm liking this. So thank you again! (I also use my dishwasher properly now)
I liked twitter 10-12 years ago. My politics are left of Bernie Sanders. BlueSky is now home for me.
I'm watching your video now. And omg thankfully there's people that can put my thoughts into words.
YouTube algorithm recommended it to me and watched the whole thing. Then Theo tweeted about you and saw his just as opened bluesky. Kinda surprising how this was just a few hours apart. I do agree with your video, it's something I've never thought about or noticed it, now you've made me aware.
idk about anyone else but i sure followed you over that video
Even better, your video convinced me of joining this site :)
Obligatory drive-by context-collapsing comment.
Wait?! More nuance on the Internet! But in all seriousness, your work is a breath of fresh air, always but especially lately! :)
What's your usual ratio? I know there's a lot of big Numitron fans who were furious ;)
bsky.app/profile/tech... Hopefully this works, I've not linked a post before
It was a very good opinion piece!
I couldn't have agreed more with your thoughts. This topic should be of great concern to everyone. Great video.
It was a great, thought provoking video. These things have always mattered, but given where we seem to be headed, it's more crucial than ever to be willing and able to learn and think for ourselves.
I couldn't have been the only one to link "Algorithmic Complacency" and AC. Even in this video we can't escape Air Conditioning. 😆 Loved the video, it was spot on.
You’re awesome! That video came out at a perfect time for me while I’ve become complacent again (I go through phases) I’m going to try to break out of it as much as I can! Keep up your amazing work
I had no idea most did not make use of the "Subscription" feature! I was very happy to be part of that 4-5% that catch your videos via my subscriptions feed. Thank you for helping articulate what I definitely could not with regard to the degradation of the Internet and the experience using it!
Should point out that just because people don’t click on his videos from the subscription feed, doesn’t mean no one uses it. I make use of the subscription feed all the time. But because YouTube defaults to the home feed when I launch it, when I see a TC video, I click on it.
Yeah, me too. I'll see the home page and jump to things I'm interested in from my subs right away, but if that algorithmic page didn't exist I'd still go through my subs to find it. Needs the improvements suggested in the video though, I hate Shorts that are just reposted chunks of videos I've seen.
I just now came here to find you, paused in the middle of that video, because I'm really enjoying that video and I didn't know that you were on Bluesky. I'm really appreciating your message in that video. Thinking = good
It was a very well made and insightful video that made me realize that I too have been affected by the algorithmic complacency. Going to use the subscriptions tab more now, I think.
You quietly and consistently inspire people to make positive changes in their lives, think differently about technology we take largely for granted, and to understand old & modern technology from basic principles - all with humour, gentle frustration, and a brown coat. So...
... It's no surprise your audience likes what you have to say & agrees. And is suspicious of letting other people's machines think for us. (Though we may also be a somewhat self-selecting sample.)
(Tangential aside... your example of the radio was a funny contrast to my experience yesterday. Had to do an image-search of my thermostat, & trust the algorithm, as it has no visible manufacturer or model number, even in the digital menu. It was out of battery & I didn't know how to change them.)
your not an old man yelling at clouds and what you are saying is totally valid, this generation is done for...
i loved that video, truly made sense. also, note that I'm gen z and I still agree with you on everything you said😊
I liked it even though I am on the other side of the political spectrum of you. Letting algorithms and now AI curate our digital life's for us does indeed vacate purpose and agency.
I know it probably doesn't feel like it sometimes, but the internet loves you. Whenever I mention your channel to someone, if they have heard of your channel they respond with effusive praise.
He changed how I make toast. How many YouTubers have that kind of impact on someone?
Funny how close that is to saying you weren't unhappy until the influencer told you to be
Because he taught people how stuff worked, or how to use it more effectively? Seems many people didn't know how to use a dishwasher correctly. I was taught wrong too. He explained how microwaves work, and why the "beverage" button is the superior way of reheating drinks.
difference between education and brainwashing
He sold me on the one handed can opener!
bro has changed many aspects of my life by gently holding my hand and explaining to me how I could achieve results I wanted easier or more effectively. Also he has made me less afraid of things I don't understand, which is one of the highest compliments a human can receive imo.
So real. I can’t use the washing machine without thinking about his channel 💙
I had given up on dishwashers until his videos and have an obscene amount of trutone lights now.
I need to find that toaster
They’ve gone up a lot. I took a gamble on one that said it didn’t work. It just needed cleaned up.
I was convinced not to buy one of those tiny desktop refrigerators, no matter how cute they look.
I use dishwashing powder now and got the soap refill store to watch the episode and now they carry the powder. Got the can opener after the video and now my favorite. This channel has changed tiny parts of my life but in positive ways.
Same here! Would be curious if there was a noticeable uptick in powder sales after his video!
The dishwasher episode got me to start using mine. After living in apartments forever with “broken” dishwashers I had given up and just used them as drying racks. Ive used my dishwasher ever since that video and its been great
Also chiming in that I've switched to dishwasher powder as well as the safety can opener!
I also now use dishwasher powder after his video hah 😁
I'm pretty sure stores are starting to stock more powder because he woke so many people up to the brands BS
I wanted to but it's tabs-only in the UK. :-( Also got the can opener though! :-)
I also switched to dishwasher powder! It's been great. Also he convinced me going electric car would go well and it has. Thanks technology connections!
We do the powder now too. Incredible how long that $5 box lasts compared to a $25 box of pods. Also got the can opener. Sad thing was I knew they existed at one point, I had used one. Then apparently completely forgot about them until I saw Alec's video
I'm still trying to convert my wife to use dish powder. Something about handling the box irks her.
What about pouring the powder into one of those small vacuum sealed food containers. Instead of dealing with the box, y'all could use a measuring spoon as the delivery method? Thinking about it, she's right, the box sucks. I'm going to start doing it this now.
yep thats what I do!
Huh. Didn't think about that. Will give it a try!
I use a measuring spoon in a container as well as I have locally a soap refill place to be able to buy bulk reusing containers. Mainly because all I could find powder wise before was the smallest box at only one grocery store lol
I actually understand her side too. I've had a few times where I wasn't paying enough attention and ended up with about 3x what I meant to put in. It's not a great experience when trying to measure out a roughly estimated "about as much as last time" when it's hard to see from every angle.
I have saved several dollars since he got me to start buying the cheapest dishwasher tablets I can find. Not using powder though - I have my limits.
Technology Connections literally changed my life. Admittedly a very minor and mundane change (how I use dish detergent) but a change nonetheless! Probably the second biggest change from a video, after Matthias Wandel's video 'Best fan placement to move air through the house'
youtu.be/1L2ef1CP-yw for that fan placement video :)
Seconded. And it's fun to see refs to his videos show up on so many different platforms.
Really great video you made. It actually made me delete my TikTok account. Looking to delete Facebook next but losing Messenger makes things diffilcult.
It's a great video, I'm honestly planning on showing it to my students (after I cut out the two swear words, haha). As a teacher I FEEL this issue with students, and you've put that feeling right into words. Thank you!
Your videos are always delightful so it doesn’t surprise me in the slightest.
I loved your vid from Feb 22, but wanted to say that I no longer login to YT to watch – and so can’t subscribe – ever since they tried to get me to ‘prove’ who I was by giving them way too much personal info (mobile # etc) So, now I just bookmark favourite channels to watch.
I watched the video yesterday. I enjoyed the trip down memory lane and the stark contrast to today's experience.
It was a great video, I kinda wanna show my kiddo lol.
Just watched it. It’s great and you’re right. Thank you!
i’m currently in the process of moving my whole day-to-day youtube watching to a new account and it feels like moving into a new house. i literally just *forgot* the subscriptions feed because it became bogged down with 13 y/o subscriptions over time and lost its appeal. can’t wait to use it again.
It is a great video. You mentioned the subscription tab which is the main way Ive used YouTube for about ten years now. I was curious and found out that TikTok also has a “subscriptions” tab but I think even less people must use it because I only hear about FYP.
I thought it was very insightful! I don’t remember too much of the early internet but trusting what I see to someone else. It’s pretty much the 21st century version of the allegory of the cave.
The funny thing is I'm watching the video right now but found this post on Discovery instead of Following.
Crazy that. How much of your feed is people telling you to do your own research?
Not a bot. Great video. ✌🏼
It's an absolute banger, to use the parlance of our time.
Great video! To the point about being in control of what media you consume; I have found turning off autoplay on youtube went a long way. It forced me to ask "what do I really want to watch?" and often times it is nothing. Which get me off the couch into the world
I think you did an amazing job covering this topic! You brought up A LOT of what is wrong with "today's internet". I appreciate your insights as someone who has also had this topic "boiling away" in my brain. We all need to educate people about this. If we don't, it's going to ruin society.
Thanks for the great insight, it’s a cloud I also frequently yell at and couldn’t agree more. Speaking of clouds, happy to have you here in the Bluesky! 💜
I legit scrambled to make this account after watching your video. It was the final push I needed
To be fare, at first, only people watching you would have already watched that video as well. And, hum... it filters already out the type of person not really opened to this kind of discussion.
It was a refreshing video, I see more and more people unable to understand the importance of reading sources yourself. It's not even that hard to find the answers but people now expect to skip even clicking on links.
I think everybody sort of agrees that most social media is detrimental, they just disagree about what makes them that way.
It's an important video.
You’re not only an educator but have changed the way many of us think about things, like heat pumps, electric vehicles, etc. You’re actually improving other people‘s lives. And you’re one of the few people on the internet who has convinced me to buy something. I love my can opener btw! 😂
I just found the schematic and I'm gonna make sure I remember how to read these before I go over it to figure out how many of what capacitors it needs. I have very little training and experience in electronic repair, so it's not terribly familiar for me.
The vast majority of us know that tech is cooking us, friend. We just have wildly varying levels of ability to do anything about it.
One of my professors in university was a huge believer of controlling your social media feed and it really rubbed off on me. Critiquing my feeds to contain only things that I wish to see made those websites 100x more bearable to use. Though for YouTube I've always used the subscriptions box!
The video was fine. I started to note shortening it might help, though again it was fine. Thanks for making it.
Shortening it might make it more accessible for those who haven't been exposed to T.C. yet. Me, I like the longer videos, but Alec needs to be played at 1.25X at least. Sorry Alec.
It's really well done and very thought-provoking. Thanks for your work.
Yeah, I have no idea how much time I've spent trying to force YouTube's algorithm to show me something new. Something outside of the stuff I'm subscribed to or have watched in the past. It's like pulling teeth.
I'm in the opposite situation. I just re-discovered an old YouTuber I used to watch daily but got lured away from by the feed.
this. it’s so annoying. sometimes i have to search for just a random topic so that i can see different things, just to be flooded with shorts. i hate how things have become
The best part of searching for something new to try and shake it up is the section where it just gives you more entirely unrelated home page recommendations. Thanks YouTube, I love half of the search page being useless
Biggest YouTube pain lately is not allowing embedded videos to play without signing into YouTube. My videos, my website. And then it shows recommendations which, at a presentation might not be something you want colleagues to see.🤬
you could make a an account used only for presentations i know it doesn’t fix the issue, but i had to do similar for youtube music. i have an account for music i listen to and one that plays when i sleep
I did make an account for the project and that’s the one I usually use. But I have to remember to never use it for anything personal. Not sure how colleagues would feel about my political leanings or need for gardening information
Wow! Watching your video now and started following you here! And yes I'm about to run my dishwasher with the powder! My dishes are cleaner with way less funny residue.
I felt the video gave words to a lot of thoughts that have shaped my choices on the internet lately. You described your ideas extremely well as usual, and I've shared it with my friends.
I think one problem is some people yearn to learn on their own, something new. And some people prefer to just have someone else tell them what they need to be concerned about.
The latter will listen to an influencer or podcast.
I'm pretty sure your audience is on the spectrum. And will agree with your in the spectrum video ideas. :v
also, shame you didn't explain latent heat and the refrigeration cycle.
There are shows that I love on streaming apps that I rarely, if ever, watch. But if those same shows are on live TV I will always stop and watch whatever episode was chosen for me. Someone else curating content is really the secret sauce that makes mindless entertainment work.
I like your new video. It is alarming how the highly curated feeds produce brain dead people who belive all kind of stupid "facts" these days... :(
I mean algorithmically curated feeds.
I mean, you make pretty compelling arguments even if I wasn’t in agreement before.
🤦
Such a good video, great argumentation! Made me create this account and you deserve my first reply! ❤️
I very much enjoyed your latest video. Although, to be fair, ..("TO BE. Faiiire....").., I enjoy ALL of your videos.
Latest video was exceptional. It expressed so much of the same concerns I have and I’m so pleased to see intelligent mindful creators calling attention to the scary state of “social media.” Thank you.
You need to judge your videos by not-mid-western standards. :)
Is this the old man yelling at the cloud? Yes, I think many of us have sensed this....bad algorithms and bad people are taking over and we are saying thank you for removing the burden of agency
I was nodding in agreement throughout.
watching it right now and had to follow you! i’ve been following your channel for a while and love anything that’s about the big picture of the ways we communicate
Not that I don't trust that metric but how about likes to views? Or maybe you could create other metrics, likes vs total of both given unsubscribed. This may have better metrics on new viewers.
I use the home tab a lot because I like that it offers a nice mixture. I usually use the subscriptions tab when I'm looking for something specific. But I should probably use the tab more often. I feel like I sometimes miss posts.
good news but its sad to think theres so many people frustrated at the state of the internet. Bring back the days of web 2.0 where it was about speed and accessibility and actual design rather than attention retention.
one of your best videos for sure.
It was a great video!
I think you (un)intentionally made the best ad for this platform :)
Just finished watching and I'm gonna spread this as far and wide as I can. I also appreciate the lack of bloopers at the end, as I'm sure others have said. Really drives the impact home of that last statement, and it's a damn good one.
For a long while there has been a lot of content made about how people are less successful at controlling their time and attention without touching the root cause and in many occasions, selling snake oil Your video explains the cause of this crisis, imo. We let go of our agency
People really use the dislike button?
Thank you for more human content!!
I loved the video. It expresses clearly what I’ve been feeling lately.
Fantastic video as usual. Always felt the “on demand” availability of so much media instead of watch/listen only when scheduled on TV/radio would lead to operational paralysis and deference to an algorithm.
It's an old fear that the human race has been struggling with for many years. (for good reason) "Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them." — from Dune by Frank Herbert (1965)
I have been considering the same for a while although every time I attempt to get a grasp on what is wrong I just find yet another wrong thing. I wrote a bit recently about YouTube on TVs forcing you into the subscribed path due to no discovery and terrible search.
Although I am looking at the subscription tab now. Good work.
hi! the early part of the video (about wanting to do manual feed curation) got me wondering if you ever got to check out cohost before it went under
I actually found this video, and your channel, through the Bluesky Discover page. (proof that sometimes "for you" pages can be worth something haha). Really loved the video, excited to go back through your catalog.
it’s so true, the algo’s make dumb dumber
Honestly for all the crotchety old man warnings in the prelude, I don't think you said anything in the least bit controversial! I take more issue with your switched outlets video than I do this! :3
Nice to hear!
I had always assumed the Subscription tab was just a list of channels one followed, not a feed of their videos, for some reasonI hadn't ever thought to check.
My Gut feeling is that your audience actually agreed with that even before you said it all
I'm watching it now and really nodding along. I mostly use the web as a way to find info, as you describe (recently, looked up the dimensions of the ANSI C12.18 optical port on the front of my electric meter, designed a mating piece and 3D printed it, now working out the supporting circuitry).
As one of the few who exclusively uses the subscriptions feed and has the home page turned off (on yt), it was a great coalescing of a lot of the things that I worry about and that “feel wrong” to me, but I hadn’t really condensed into words yet.
People dislike your videos? Why?
Just saw it. Your most eloquent piece so far.
I haven't been able to watch yet. Depending on how the Purdue-IU game goes tomorrow, I might have to give it until Monday.
Despite the game going exceptionally badly, I did watch the video today. And, not surprisingly, it's great and I can't really think of anything I disagreed with. The one response I have was also well-addressed. YouTube is probably the only platform where I appreciate the algorithm.
Sorry to rain on your parade, but I'm pretty sure your viewers populate the higher realms of the bell curve, so a positive response pretty much comes with the territory ...
It was a good video. I think that some of that problem might just come from people not being interested in learning about the tech anymore and like the simplicity of it
People still use the dislike button after they removed the visibility? It was a pretty rarely used feature even prior, I would have figured it'd have fallen off even further.
Watching it right now. Honestly, there's no need to prerequisite your content in case people don't like it. It is of the same quality and quirkiness that your subscribers are here for.I quote things that I learned from your channel to people around me with notable frequency.
Piggy backing off this, thank you for articulating why @bsky.app is so refreshing. I can see what I want to see, not what the algorithm tells me to see. It is indeed more manual, which I love. The other platforms have become completely unusable and useless.
I’m not surprised the bulk of your audience understands and agrees with these points… TBH I’ve watched about every video you’ve posted for years, but I’m not sub’d, cause I don’t have a YouTube account…I just watch your stuff when I want to or more recently when you post where I’m watching, here…
It’s a really good video. You should be proud.
Watching it right now and paused it as soon as you said you were on Bluesky...
I enjoyed it. 👍🏻
Hey, you made an important point - even if as you say it's not necessarily a new or original point, I think you brought a great angle to it. And, with a dash of shame, thanks for reminding me about the Subscription tab. (To be fair, I'm glad the algorithm consistently puts your videos in my recs)
Damned finel ratio considering I saw the video on Reddit’s “Popular” feed.
Thanks to this video I had a realization: I watch YT primarily on my TVs app and it doesn’t place Subscriptions near the top of its sidebar. Because it’s not conveniently accessible (I’d have to navigate over and down several clicks) I became to be algorithmically complacent. 🤔
it was such a great video! a lot of what you said reminded me of the book How to Do Nothing by Jenny Odell.
I enjoyed it but you mentioned enjoying driving around seeing the Christmas lights. Even the LED ones?
Funnily enough, the algorithm is playing a big role in that! The people your longform content is being suggested to are way more likely to be critical thinkers: your channel is all about finding out how stuff works and putting in the effort to understand it completely. (1/2)
What I think is missing from your analysis, is categorizing content distribution algorithms: - Those that help you find content you like - Those that try to shape the content you like Youtube's, being mostly the former, brought a lot of similar-thinkers to the video, hence the likes! (2/2)
Have to share the video with the people in your life that you know, only consume misinformation and clips. Just tell them when they have 30 minutes to watch the video. It’s important.
I need to argue that YT is much more of the latter than the former. There’s a whole category of video essays that are essentially critiques of YT’s algorithm and how punitive it is when content creators don’t stay within a specific format or adhere to specific practices. (Thumbnails, length, freq.)
After watching it, though, I feel compelled to say something needlessly antagonistic and acontextual. But I'm a fellow old man with clouds to yell at, and it's really cloudy tonight, so I'll be nice.
It was a great video
I was honestly kind of surprised by your point about youtube users avoiding the subscriptions tab. I check my subscriptions a few times a day to look for interesting content before checking the for you feed.
i'm a person who has "avoided" it, but i've always kind of known it was better - whenever the home screen wasn't giving me anything good, i'd look at my subscriptions tab - but other than that i just never really think about it, and now that i think about it i dont know why
That's really neat. Obviously there's data behind TC's assertion beyond your experience, but my experience is totally different. It kind of surprises me that more people don't check subscriptions more frequently!
I honestly never check it. I also found it interesting how many channels I follow on a regular basis and never subscribe to! This was a needed wake up call for me
Same here. By defaulting to the recommendation feed in the homepage, YouTube is nudging you into using it over the subs feed. I use an extension called "UnTrap for YouTube" which can redirect me to the subs feed when opening the homepage
You are a great content creator, thank you. Please still let us know when LED light strings master the whimsy of the twinkle strings tho... I'm banking on it...
Good to see that the ReturnYoutubeDislike-numbers are pretty accurate, showing 99.2% Likes on this (btw. fantastic) video.
This is one of the best materials on the matter of social media and related algorithms I had pleasure watching.
I really liked it. I felt the same way before seeing your video but didn't realize that I had already been sucked into the algorithm so bad. I really do hope YT will help optimize the subscription feed. However that's not in their interest so its doubtful.
As an AI researcher like the ones you called out, that was truly unexpected and appreciated. There is strong interest in certain domains (generally only publicly funded) to make AI that supports humanity in transparent, trustworthy ways that don’t erode our social structures.
This was fucking awesome! www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEJp...
Thank you so much for your video. Being in the early stages of escaping algorithmic complacency, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you putting a name to it.
Whelp I'm on Bluesky now so I guess it worked
It was very exciting to see the title of this video, to know that you were going to use your talent to write about matters of life. Thanks man!
Came out with a different perspective than I was expecting and fully agree with your sentiments. I use my YT Subs feed all the time but have found great channels on the recommendations too. Thanks!
I commented this in the video, but I'll repeat it here. I'm in the process of reducing / eliminating the algorithm from my life. This video has cemented my decision.
I have been undertaking a project in the last three months to remove algorithm from my life. I exclusively use the subscription feed. This video is really the last nail in the coffin. It's the last thing I put on Facebook. The last thing I sent to my family. I'm now more resolute in my decision.
I was just about to watch it 👁️👃👁️ 👄
That was easily your most important video to date. Well-argued, and concise.
You're awesome. You changed my life and many others in mundane but important ways. Don't doubt yourself My dishwasher works better because of you
Just watched it, and I've gotta say thank you for making that. I've tried explaining this problem to people, but have never been able to properly put it into words. You're a good person, and I've always appreciated the level of effort you still put into your videos.
I liked the video. In fact, that's how I got here.
And I must say, I agree with it
loved the video a lot, good job!!
I should go check, nothing has shown up in my feed as of late
a video about algorithms not showing up in your algorithm…
Just watched it . Interesting and I agree. We are all becoming doom scrolling rabbit hole jumpers. I myself am guilty of it from time to time.
Thank you for this video. Tears in my eyes hearing so many of my cluttered frustrated thoughts laid out in your easy to understand presentations. Thank you thank you thank you! 😁
Agreed!! When @themolluskk.bsky.social called me into the room to watch the new video, I found that both of us were piping up audibly in agreement throughout... It was refreshing to know that we're not alone in our concerns. ... /1
I hope those who don't know life before the dark times of the internet REALIZE and that they care enough to find their way out of it. It's incredibly depressing to see so many people are content with being spoon-fed, rather than trying to explore and learn things beyond algorithmic spew😓
The amount of views given the regular time frame it takes for your videos to get over a million is also pretty telling to the lengths that platform prefers users not engage on you topic. My theory is you will halt progress after about 500k. If I am right come back and like this message!
As soon as you mentioned you were on Bluesky, I had to pause the video to come follow! Love your work and appreciate all the time and effort you put into your channel.
Great work with the algorithm video, it was an interesting take! It's not surprising though that people have started to offload their thinking to AI — thinking is hard, it takes energy, the brain is lazy and does not want to consume energy. It's the same reason why bad habits are hard to break.
I want you to know that I appreciate your video. I've been saying much of what you are saying for a long time. Please keep making these sorts of videos. In a world where we're dominated by algorithms, more people saying what you are saying is absolutely necessary.
I still remember our conversation from months ago about how to pick and choose battles, and understand people view the world differently. I think about how much it ties into this world of algorithmic dominated society, and how much I've been shackled by it.
No worries, there are a lot of us who feel the same. Sometimes, I can help but to get frustrated at the decrease in critical thinking. As an engineer who spends time in R&D I always have a co-op (aka intern) I'm mentoring. The last two have had next to no ability to dig deep into problems.
still can't believe that only 4% of your views come of the subscription tab I use this tab daily since 2011 wtf I thought that this was the norm
Curious on the subscription metrics vs recommendations: I subscribe, but your videos will show up in recommendations normally first, so I usually click them there. I check subscriptions after to see if any weren't recommended. How does that reflect in stats?
Your typing style sounds so much like the way you speak i can practically hear your voice lol 💖
When you consider the terrifying proportion of people in this world who appear to be incapable of fact checking and logical thinking (yet often call themselves the 'critical thinkers' while also believing COVID jabs had trackers in) I'd say that's good! Keep being you!
Between the coffee and the toast, and now this, how can we not like. Inconceivable.
Another suggestion like using the Subscriptions tab: use a chrome extension to hide the suggestions in the side bar and after the video. I also hide the home page suggestions using AdBlock custom selectors. So, I search for what I want to see instead of being served what they want me to see.
This is what happens when someone writes something unexpected and inspiring. Might I suggest you do one on how Amazon has broken the retail space. And how you can use your brain to buy direct. Which causes my question, with Retail dying, where can a nerd buy speaker cables, aside from Amazon?
Unless you're looking for wires with specific terminations, just get lamp cord from any hardware store. Speaker wire is so close to a scam that I can't quite contain myself.
Good idea on that lamp cord. And I can get that local too. Just not on Friday, cuz reasons ;)
Huh. Never thought of that before. Next time I rewire my stereo setup, lamp cord it is if I need more wiring. Copper is copper!
Now if you're talking about RCA signal cables... lots of places still sell them. And if you want banana terminations on cables for speakers that can be a little more tricky. But that is very DIY-able.
That cloud needed some yelling.
Wait… a new video.. I’m a subscriber.. what the hell you doing YouTube??
