mayhaps all the incredibly stupid slippery slope arguments we've witnessed in the last couple of decades have made us blind to the actual slippery slopes we're careening towards at the moment.

There was a point where conspiracies lost all the neon and sparkle, and it suddenly seemed that was the point. Conspiracies themselves (by and large) were "the conspiracy." It doesn't have to be by design per se I heard in a movie once "let em run with that if they wanna embarrass themselves."

ngl I think a lot of bluesky is stuck in that scenario where there's an emergency and everyone assumes somebody else is calling 911. it's why anyone who gets decent training on how to deal with emergencies is told to point at someone and say "you - call 911" not a perfect analogy but it rhymes

Clepston @vicoris.bsky.social

The problem I have with crying slippery slope is that at least in a legal sense American society is built on precedent and something being allowed once is a genuine justification for it being allowed again. Obviously it’s not that simple but it’s still very real.

Clepston @vicoris.bsky.social

“Gay marriage will lead to legal bestiality” is obviously stupid but “allowing the courts to disregard constitutional protections once will allow it to happen more than once” is a very legitimate concept!

I think these aren't new slippery slopes, these are the REAL results of former slippery slope arguments. Immigration doesn't slip into to economic collapse but thinking it does leads you to fascist beliefs, queerness doesn't slip into national moral decay but it does lead you to... fascist beliefs.

touka @toukaevenkuruga.bsky.social

So the fact that so many Americans had swallowed slippery slope arguments in the past has not exactly slippery sloped us into fascism, but that they always have been fascist in nature. So no slips were sloped, its just the progressive establishment of fascism over time through propaganda.
