mayhaps all the incredibly stupid slippery slope arguments we've witnessed in the last couple of decades have made us blind to the actual slippery slopes we're careening towards at the moment.

are they the slippery slopes that apply to the stupid only? can the highly intelligent slip UP the slopes?
There was a point where conspiracies lost all the neon and sparkle, and it suddenly seemed that was the point. Conspiracies themselves (by and large) were "the conspiracy." It doesn't have to be by design per se I heard in a movie once "let em run with that if they wanna embarrass themselves."
Perhaps related, perhaps not lmfao (No ever seems to understand why I'm connecting things... well rarely)
We mistook their earnest brainstorming for counter arguments. 😞
Oh you mean the cliff? Because it looks like a cliff
Slippery slope leading to a cliff, actually.
we are the boys who cried slippery slope
Seeing "you're overreacting" in responses to posts stating actual facts we're currently living through is very weird indeed.
Down. Careening down.
I knew a guy who said that all slippery slope arguments were false so that tracks.
Yup
I agree with you because it's so common of a problem I'm not very sure which slippery slopes are you refering too exactly
There is a variety of them and they get switched out for maintenance once the lubricant wears away.
Definitely already speeding down the slope...
When I was a child, I watched Dr Who from the start and my first memory is of episode one being repeated, we were about to have an ice age, north sea oil would last to the mid 1980s, overpopulation would see food riots in the early 2000s..... My feet aren't good.. Put some grit in that slope.
NO ‘perhaps’ about it! UR VERY near the bottom NOW WAKE UP u dunderheads! “Don’t wait until freedom is gone to regret its loss. FREEDOM isn’t GOD-GIVEN; it is FOUGHT for by the PEOPLE”
Are you saying we’re on a slippery slope slope
We aren’t careening **towards** them any more - we are in the fast and furious downward slide.
I don't necessarily disagree but I use language the way I do in large part because I agree with Jamelle here bsky.app/profile/jame...
ngl I think a lot of bluesky is stuck in that scenario where there's an emergency and everyone assumes somebody else is calling 911. it's why anyone who gets decent training on how to deal with emergencies is told to point at someone and say "you - call 911" not a perfect analogy but it rhymes
This here! From the uk, Looks like the building is on fire and someone has written a strongly worded letter to the matches. Meanwhile everyone else argues about how the letter writer is a bad guy actually and we shouldn’t support him anyway. Please someone, pick up a hose!
Diffusion of responsibility
In conjunction with that, I've also noticed a lot more people who I assume are on the left side of the political spectrum are also entertaining more conspiracy theories. The whole "i don't know what to do, so I'll invent something I can control" is a very powerful feeling.
More like "careening down".
eh, semantics. we know what alec meant
All the people who "slippery slope" on a regular basis have a full blown mudslide in their pants. (Probably)
I'd correct "careening towards" to read "sliding down".
I suspect that was the point of the people having made them in the first place.
slippery cliff, actually
What would those be??? Nothing compares to what is going on now
Now we have Donald Trump who is the luge run of slippery slopes.
Also, people tend to be optimistic and prone to denial. Think Monty Python's black knight.
It's simple. We, the human race, are not Human yet.
Check out "I'm still here" on Netflix - about fascist "disappearances" in Brazil. Military dictatorship killed suspects and country didn't confirm it for 20 years.
That was the plan. “Flood the zone with bullshit” so low information people like my parents that barely pay attention hear a bunch of bullshit before the truth and then say “well I don’t know what to think” and give up instead of spending the hours that might be needed to be well informed.
We're not on the slope. We are already at the bottom of the slip and slide.
Decades of training have gone into this moment.
The problem I have with crying slippery slope is that at least in a legal sense American society is built on precedent and something being allowed once is a genuine justification for it being allowed again. Obviously it’s not that simple but it’s still very real.
“Gay marriage will lead to legal bestiality” is obviously stupid but “allowing the courts to disregard constitutional protections once will allow it to happen more than once” is a very legitimate concept!
I think these aren't new slippery slopes, these are the REAL results of former slippery slope arguments. Immigration doesn't slip into to economic collapse but thinking it does leads you to fascist beliefs, queerness doesn't slip into national moral decay but it does lead you to... fascist beliefs.
So the fact that so many Americans had swallowed slippery slope arguments in the past has not exactly slippery sloped us into fascism, but that they always have been fascist in nature. So no slips were sloped, its just the progressive establishment of fascism over time through propaganda.
I'm saying progressive here as in a "progressive cancer" here not like the "progressive left"
Omg YES I’ve been thinking this exact same thing!!
I think this is exactly why we saw arguments claiming that marriage equality was going to lead to people marrying their pets. It’s because they can’t believe that anyone would be using a playbook other than theirs.
There is no slippery slope when you have a great pair of shoes that prevent you from going down that slope. Just sayin’
It's not a "slippery slope", it's an "exciting amusement slide!" Yeah, it's a slippery slope, who am I kidding?
nothing slippery about this slope, these policies have been the apex of right wing thought since probably ever. In the US, it has just taken this long for true left/labor/human rights leaders to become so benign and rudderless. Nixon/Reagan/Bushes/Trump…we didn’t slide, we walked right into it
Careering towards. I don't think we're zigging and zagging, but going full-bore, straight ahead, down that slope.
Allowing ice to bypass due process for anyone who "looks illegal": it's ok they won't abuse this Allowing 2 consenting adult men to get married: that's a slippery slope!
Well some people didn't like the slip-n-slide with water and fun times and health care and school and infrastructure... They preferred the raw slip n slide with rocks and dirt and dead pregnant women.
FYI it's just "mayhap".
This is how I feel about the golden means fallacy too. Like maybe they’re making a fallacy by assuming a golden means fallacy 🤷♂️
idk this seems like a slippery slope
this is known in technical terms as the "slippery 'slippery slope fallacy' fallacy"
Be careful: if you start doing this, it'll be nested slippery slopes the entire way down.
and on this day a great term was coined
The slippery slope fallacy definitely kept me from going all in with formal logic and becoming that guy. It can be used to misrepresent the facts, sure, but it becomes a dangerous trope when you are on a ramp covered in cow birthing lube in your hard soled loafers.
I don't think we're careening toward slippery slopes or the cliff. This is what the fall feels like.
The thing people fail to understand about the slippery slope fallacy is that if you can prove that the slope really is slippery, there's no fallacy. Slippery slope is just a really specific form of false premise.
a good analogy for the current constitutional crisis is if the boy who cried wolf was actually the wolf
Oh, we're in full slide. The slope was the last 50 years
and maybe that was the point all along.
wouldn't put it past 'em
no shit
"George W. Bush is building a turnkey totalitarian state" was derided as a slippery slope, and Obama and Biden did jack all to reverse it because the public will was lacking. Guess who's holding the key now?
The Boy Who Cried 'Slippery Slope.' Sometimes I feel like we're all like those creatures from folklore with shorter legs on one side of the body because they'd adapted to living on steep hills for so many generations. Can't remember what flat ground is, all we can imagine is slightly-less steep.
