SpaceX CEO Elon Musk wants to send a cargo ship to Mars by the end of next year. Here’s why that plan likely won’t pan out.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk wants to send a cargo ship to Mars by the end of next year. Here’s why that plan likely won’t pan out.
It won’t pan out because STARSHIP IS AN ABJECT AND TOTAL FAILURE
It won’t pan out because the idea of colonizing Mars is fundamentally stupid. Small science mission, sure… a million people? GFY.
I mean yeah, colonizing Mars is something that at this point is utterly impossible. But we don’t even have to engage with the Mars part of this because SpaceX can’t even reliably leave the atmosphere
The first part is true and the latter part is false. SpaceX is the most reliable space launch operator. For example when SLS was delayed, SpaceX came to help and launched Europa Clipper to planet Jupiter. Starship v2 has a reliability issue, but it is just a test article.
Less a test article than it is an ACME product at this point. Hand it off to Wile E. Coyote
It’s just a joke at this point. The bigger joke? The dumbass liars who show up to white knight for a Nazi billionaire. They can’t get HLS to work. All it has to do is lift shit for the lunar surface to orbit… Oh wait… they have to launch 30 rockets to do that… Such bullshit.
Starship is too big. That's the problem.
It has to be big if they plan to reuse it. Eg for the Space Shuttle, they discarded the fuel tank. Time will tell if steel proves to be too heavy material.
Time has told. Starship is DOA
Starship v1 already has proven that the basic concept works, by landing from orbital speed.
that’s more like a proof of concept than anything remotely viable for NASA missions, and it’s long in the past. None have ever managed to take up even a fraction of their needed payload, and the fail rate keeps getting worse and worse.
Where do you get that payload info from? So far I have not seen a test for payload capability.
This is nonsense and a separate issue. Reusability is pointless, because you give uo your cargo space for return fuel. The current Starship cargo capacity is pathetic. Steel is a ridiculous choice as well.
Reusability is mandatory in the long run. But they should do expendable first, now that v2 is known to be a failure. Why do you state that the cargo capacity is pathetic?
Because it is. Reusability is not "mandatory", lol. Building shit in space, so we aren't stuck in this gravity well is what's mandatory.
You are a joke. Large rockets are mandatory to build anything in space. And provenly reusability is the way to go.
fElon's whackjob father named him after a character in a book about a man who ends up running a Mars colony. fElon is just acting out his destiny. Just like Trump's father, who wanted him to be a 'killer'.
The approach is the issue, that’s just a lot of weight.
Musk needs to get out of the politics game & go back to being a bizarre breeding engineering genius. What he & Trump were/are doing is a waste of time, money & aggravation for the citizens of the USA. Eventually, Trump blows everything up.
Mars is closer than many don't realize. It's in CA. This is possible by next week. The planet Mars? No way!
It's because all of his rockets blow up.
Off hand, i'd say it's because his rockets keep blowing up and there is no chance one ever gets to Mars.
CNN loves playing Stormy Daniels for Musk.
Hopefully Apartheid Clyde Musk is on the next rocket he attempts to launch. The world will have a wonderful party afterwards.
likely won't pan out? no shit...
A baroquely solicitous headline worthy of the NYT. “Stirs up talk of setbacks”, lol.
Is it because his rockets keep exploding
A video-game addicted megalomaniac harbors dreams of being a pioneer on Mars. In the meantime humans are wreaking havoc on the only known habitable planet. Save the earth, and when that is accomplished, turn your sites to distant planets.
Is it because his rockets keep exploding? It's probably that, right?
CNN, you really don't gotta explain this. Anyone with functional critical thinking skills can figure out why that won't pan out.
“ he’s an idiot, a liar, and a thief”
Cargo ship for who There's no one there, it's completely uninhabitable Any asshole can fire a ship full of cheetos to Mars, that doesn't make it space exploration or anything related to it
Elon Musk *is* a cargo ship…of vaporware.
lol. The guy’s supposed self driving taxi runs over child dummies and blows through bus stops and is supposed to be out soon. He NEVER delivers & yet many keep buying his bs & lies- why? Bc he’s rich?
Is there no Russian spacecraft available to tow it?
This is the equivalent of a meaningless timeout in child discipline. You gonna count to 3 next CNN? Push equally hard on all parties for all stories. Not complicated
He says a lot of lies.... Where the Tesla Roadster ya Nazi
Cool he should go with it to make sure everything is legit
I have to subscribe to read this stupid shit?
Because the idea is totally fucking ridiculous?
The real answer is in the first 4 words of the headline.
Not gonna happen
He just wasted a lot of money
dumb as hell to waste breath talking about this, CNN Elon’s wasting resources—as usual.
Stop giving SpaceX taxpayer money already! If the government wants to cut spending, just cut off Elon and his failure after failure.
"Are Musk's Mars ambitions farther away than thought?" Elon Musk is NEVER going to send ANYTHING to Mars. It's ALL a MASSIVE scam to get our money. Think of everything we could eradicate with the money being GIVEN to Musk. Homelessness is America? Gone. Food insecurity in America? Gone. #Waste
Oh, is it because he's actually just trying to prop up the share price with bullshit, by any chance ?
Because he's a lucky idiot who bought a company and doesn't know shit about engineering, mathematics or physics? This dude is not building these fucking things in his fucking gargage. There are people who know what they're doing and Elon isn't one of them.
Each rocket forms a hundreds of miles lenght hole in ionosphere&osone layer allowing harmful carcinogenic sun beams and other beams enter earth to threaten human health, also they expell toxic gases! ALL SPACE TECH&ROCKETS MUST BE BANNED UNTIL ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY TECH IS DEVELOPED TO SAVE US ALL!
It won’t work out because they keep exploding on earth
"Because shit keeps going boom, and because the boss is whacked out on drugs." Next question.
Is it because Musk never actually releases anything, he just says he’s going to have something great in a few years and credulous journalists repeat it as fact?
Hey CNN, it's OK to just say Musk is a very wealthy moron and his claims of "going to Mars" are delusional.
The only way he is getting to Mars is on an acid trip.
He should stick with 2 weeks. Fascists love promising shit in 2 weeks.
Hey, stop being a stenographer for his stock portfolio.
www.planetearthandbeyond.co/p/starship-w...
He said he was a few years away from a trip to Mars like 8 years ago. He’s a liar. When will the media stop repeating his lies and feeding into the myth that this corrupt, paranoid racist is some kind of genius. He. Is. Not.
Top of the list: because Elon musk said he would.
An explosive news
Don’t regurgitate these lies. wtf!
Heat waves and raging forest fires... but this guy can explode rockets left and right. There needs to be some control or consequences for his polluting and the hazards he causes.
Pull all funding from Space douche
Maybe Grok can tell him how to build it!
Because we haven’t invented purple hair?
Physics?
Serious answer: Because Musk is a lying grifter and doesn't know anything about space flight. Or social media. Or coding. Or car design.
He sucks?
This guy's, like, 0 for 4, no? I could not-successfully-launch-a-rocket for A LOT LESS.
Why do you cowards coddle him?
Because nothing he promises comes to fruition…ever?
Yeah his predictions are always so reliable
He'll have self-driving teslas that don't murder pedestrians before that happens
Because nothing hehe wanted to do gets some in time and he’s a stupid liar and you fall for it again and again?
How much does it cost to build one of those rockets that keeps exploding on the ground and in the air?
Is this a manuscript CNN because an article couldn’t even list all the reasons 🙄
Cause his rockets blow up?
Any bookies in Vegas taking odds on if the ship blows up before making it out of orbit?
ROFL
If Musk plans to send a cargo ship of fireworks, I think he’s got a good chance of being successful.
He wants public money.
I’m only unlikely to head to Alpha Centauri with Salma Hayek to start the first interstellar colony.
The easiest part about engineering a cargo flight to Mars is to not have the rocket blow up on the launch pad. But Elon hasn't figured that part out, yet.....
No shit Sherlock
Because he keeps blowing up rockets like he blew up the US Government?
Hi! I need to speak with "the manager". I have an issue with the illustration/photograph being utilized on this particular article. Here's why that plan likely won't pan out. These photos are much more befitting. -ONE.😂😂😂 🗞📰🗞 #NEWSKAREN
DO YOU FUCKING THINK
Likely?!? Sweet Christ.
Maybe she's born with it. Maybe it's sabotage.
"likely"?!? It's more likely that I'll sprout wings and flap my way to Mars.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=bID7...
Because he already said he would "have a man on Mars in ten years" thirteen years ago?
One of his spaceships *literally* blew up today?
bsky.app/profile/damc...
The man who constantly over promises is not set to deliver on his most ambitious one? You don't say... I mean, yeah, good explanation of the specifics, just... not very surprising that he is YET AGAIN promising something he will not be able to deliver on.
it “won’t pan out” because he’s a lying con-artist who’s made wild “predictions” about the companies he owns for over a decade now while organizations like this parrot his every word like he’s a genius..
GEE I LOVE POLLUTING THE EARTH OVER AND OVER FOR ELON’S EGO TRIP!! F’ing STOP HIM
Aww ya think?!
Is the answer “because his rockets keep blowing up”? It is, isn’t it?
Judges would also except “because he’s a complete liar who makes shit up he can’t deliver on to manipulate stock prices. See: humanoid robots”.
The heavy materials shipments are clearly marked “explodium — use only for exploding” yet SpaceX keeps using them for projects that should not explode.
Is it because it'll explode before it leaves our orbit?
“won’t pan out” = “will blow up” ?
How unfortunate 🤣
A metaphor for his political life blowing to smithereens, no?
He will never, I repeat, never send a rocket to Mars.
Rocket ships that blow up on the launch pad generally won't make it to Mars.
Just like the country.
He's full of shit.
Taking him seriously on this stuff is ridiculous. He just says stuff. Not to mention- why would we need a cargo ship to Mars next year? Oh yeah, we don’t
If they make it out of Earth orbit they'll blow up trying to land on Mars. But at least millions of people will lose health insurance to pay for it.
SEND MUSK TO MARS on a Spaceship using his FAILED FSD, FAILED Robotaxis, and FAILED Robots that are 25 years behind those of Boston Dynamics. Frankly, MUSK would NEVER even reach the MOON. #ProofOfConcept He has only FOOLED the FOOLS.
Maybe we should solve the problems we have on Earth before bringing them to Mars?
That's exactly why the billionaires are trying to get to mars. Escape the planet they're killing, leave the poors to deal with the problems they're responsible for causing.
Because in addition to Musk being a Fascist jackass, he is also a feckless greed-weasel.
if north korea blew up this many rockets you would be owning them
You'll note that he says a lot of things.
This is why he had DOGE cut cut cut. His view is that the only thing worth spending government dollars on is his obsession with getting to Mars. These tech bros who want to cheat death are all in on it (Thiel plans to have his head frozen). They are NUTS. And we are paying for it.
“…won’t likely pan out.”? Um, how about, not a snowball’s chance in hell. Why give air to this inevitable failure? You have nothing better to report on?
Going out on a limb here… but is it because it’s going to get blown to smithereens?
TLDR - because Musk never delivers on his promises, bang.
You guys cannot be serious with this bullshit. Try this instead: "Elon Musk is a lying sack of shit. Here's why his plan to send a cargo ship to mars is complete nonsense."
And a pony — Musk offered the woman a pony
Take the pony. Leave the cannoli.
That was a different woman—one of his employees.
because he's a corrupt psycho???
The article should read “SpaceX CEO and Nazi salute aficionado Elon Musk…”
Oh we already know why.
Maybe because he ish go BOOM!
We are paying for these endless failures, aren’t we
This is what makes Musk-Trump fights so comical. They are both big time liars, self-promoting crooks. They both do anything for money and say anything and get away with it!
This is the fourth rocket that has completely blown up since the trump administration began, Biden zero. Aircraft, no domestic flights down in sixteen years until the trump regime. Now they are common place. The free press remains quiet.
Elon should do a full Stockton Rush…. TONITE if he’s really The Man.
The New Spruce Goose
Hmmm is it because everything he touches literally fucking explodes? by chance?
Stop taking his bullshit seriously
⬆️This. Quit handing him money.
But SpaceX has: 1) the only domestic human-rated spacecraft (alternative is paying 3x to Russia for Soyuz) 2) The most dependable spacecraft 2) By far the cheapest medium/heavy lift vehicles
You’ve been chugging the Kool-Aid. NASA is safer with a lower rate of exploding rockets. Spacex considers explosions to be successful in the participation trophy sense. It’s why they don’t use them for people.
Falcon is empirically safer than STS *and* Apollo. This isn't opinion; it's literally math.
Nope, SpaceX explodes a lot of rockets. They cook their books and count explosions as successful. That is why they are cheaper. They cut corners on safety by reusing ICBM parts that were meant to be disposable.
What are you talking about? Falcon 9 has flown almost 500 times with IIRC 3 failures to deliver payload. This is a higher rate than STS (2 failures over 135 flights) Though I think STS-27 should be included due to sheer dumb luck not getting everyone killed. arstechnica.com/science/2022...
if you want to include landings falcon 9 only has 464 landings. Nasa doesn't launch anymore but did over 1000 explorer(no-crew) and over 200 crewed missions. Shuttles were it, SpaceX doesn't have robot arms.
It's cute how SpaceX likes to be optimistic by reframing failures as learning successes, brilliant SEO strategy. The Starship program is a total con job, that's why he threatened to scrap it during the 'spat' last week.
Which Falcon launches were failures that you think are mis-attributed? I think once again you are confusing Falcon with Starship. Starship is engineering prototypes. Falcon is a commercial vehicle that routinely launches without issue.
Falcon 1 was crap, 2/9 is bad. Starship is a zero, they should cancel it and get a refund. The SpaceX and Nasa data doesn't match on F9 missions. By what measure do you consider success?
If Elon says so, I guess it must be true
Not very dependable with these babies
I mean it literally is. They're in triple digits of successful sequential launches. It's empirically safer than space shuttle, Apollo, any other launcher.
Recent challenges belie this… it seems that at $65-150million per launch the explosions pretty costly Pushing too fast perhaps?
The great thing is it's their money they're setting on fire. I'm just here for the fireworks
You could look up a scorecard, but absolutely no idea about how the company is run huh? Interesting.
By their money you mean our money
starship is funded with 3 billion dollars of tax payer money, unless they've burned through it already
Where did you see that? The Starship program cost is in single digit billion IIRC. There is a milestone-based contract for Artemis that is roughly $3b. Are you thinking of that? That money has not been given because SpaceX has yet to meet the milestones.
you're right, not all 3 billion has been disbursed since they can't hit any of their milestones after "build rocket" and "launch rocket", but as of this article they have disbursed 1.26 billion in tax dollars to space x: www.teslarati.com/spacex-secon...
While you could have said a decade ago that SpaceX was spending their own money on the Starship that's certainly not true now or for the foreseeable future. SpaceX is getting over $4 billion just for Starships used for Artemis 3 and 4. 1/2 arstechnica.com/space/2025/0...
Yep. The government has paid ~24b and got services worth of 40b+.
This does not apply to starship like at all.
This branch is about the launch services the gov't is spending money on, namely Falcon. You're right it we are not talking about Starship
Only because of your attempted segue. The discussion was about Starship and going to Mars (lol). Also, SpaceX isn't profitable and most of their launches are for Starlink, which is also not profitable, nor will it ever be. Just cons on top of cons.
The other guy was saying to stop giving SpaceX money. The only rocket they're getting money for today is Falcon, which is problematic to move away from.
Starship is funded my NASA. It was supposed to be a human landing system from lunar orbit to the surface. They've already spent $3 billion and the total budget is $4.8 billion. Obviously it's not going to work because it can't even reach orbit reliably and it's too massive to send to the moon.
lol this shit barely made it to orbit once. You think it’s gonna go 40 million miles?
None of those points are remotely relevant to whether Musk's Mars talk is plausible. You do need a reliable spacecraft to get to Mars, but that's a bare minimum requirement, and SpaceX has done nothing anywhere near the scale of such a project - no one has.
The only money SpaceX is currently getting from the gov't is for Falcon launches. Talking about cutting funding to SpaceX is directly relevant to Falcon.
BlueSky's threading behavior can make these conversations confusing. You saw yourself as only responding to "quit giving Musk money", I saw you in the context of the original topic.
That said, I think it's a mistake to see "quit giving him money" as entirely separate from "quit taking his bullshit seriously." As long as SpaceX belongs to Musk, every project is potentially tainted with his bullshit. It's not feasible for a major government contractor to have a madman as CEO/CTO.
Also I'm not sure how you can say that SpaceX is only receiving government money for Falcon, when Trump has been such a huge and corrupt booster of StarLink.
You go in it then. Sign yourself right up for the manned version. Go on, we'll wait.
Falcon is great. Starship is bullshit. Any questions?
Jesus, I just read 2. Explosions are when things stop being the things they used to be. Hope this helps.
...They all exploded. Dude, your 1 is detritus blown across the American wilderness. I'm trying not to call you stupid, you are the one complicating that
Then simply take Elon's shares off him. Because it's not something wrong with the team, it's the nut behind the controls.
This! He's been lying at least since 2011 by saying he would be sending humans to Mars within a decade. I'm glad to see CNN calling him out but others need to do so too. bsky.app/profile/cosm...
Who would sign up for Elmo's Inferno Ride?
I am not happy with Mr. Musk he went against Americans as a non-American born person. He made billions off our country how dare he be against the taxpayers footing his wealth. I do not wish him poorly or anyone else. But I have never carried such spite for a handful of the rich gutting America.
If Mr. President must wait weeks to decide to help Israel regarding Iran the nuclear threat isn’t imminent? Or perhaps operation sneaky will occur sooner and the “two week”comment is a decoy like we are not on our best game? No more wars! God save US. 🙏 Amen
No he doesn't, he's just saying that. He knows he won't. At end of next year he'll be saying end of the year after, and so on.
it won't pan out because musktard and everything it touches fails miserably. cnn used to be a "news" organization, now, it shills shitty books and NEVER pushes back against anything it's told because it's afraid of losing access. shitty reporting on shitty.
Is it because they keep exploding?
SpaceX and muskkk are scams. No one will ever go on mars. Ever. It’s just its way to keep pumping middle class hard work money to its billionaires pocket.
Not on my dime. I’m with Neil DT. It’s a futile prospect. Look up the temperatures yourself. It’s their escape plan for a nuclear world and you’re not invited.
Even if a nuclear holocaust were imminent and escape to Mars were technically feasible, I’d much rather die on Earth than try to survive on Mars.
??? So cnn finally pulled their heads out of their own asses. Stop being the pied piper of manufactured consent and get back to the town crier FFS
He needs a realistic goal, like blowing up a rocket on Mars in 2026. 🚀
If he keeps blowing up his rockets he won't be able to launch himself into any space.
If we cant fix Earth how can we live on mars?
TLDR, the plans are bullshit
No shit, Sherlock.
Getting ahead of himself , with rockets exploding on the Launch pad !
It won’t work out because the douche doesn’t know shit about rockets. He’s a scam artist. He steals other people’s ideas. Has absolutely no thought process of his own. It’s all regurgitated bullshit.
Wow, CNN asking the tough questions that anyone who had half a brain and was paying attention years ago could have answered. The answer is “Fuck no he isn’t going to Mars”
Lots and lots of drugs?
Because he's just chatting shit as always? Fuck me the credulous repetition of whatever slop crosses his mind is deeply depressing
Is it because it's an Elon Musk timeframe? I bet it is!
Musk and Space X have been five years away from going to Mars for close to 20 years now, and that'll continue to be the case until someone better comes along, figures out all the hard stuff, and then Elon will lie and claim he did it.
He would gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.
CNN a proud cunt news network spewing propaganda nonsense
This headline has me picturing him blowing up an actual traditional sea-going cargo ship while trying to launch it into space, which is not outside the realms of possibility
The bigger concern is why does Musk’s Mars fantasy seem to involve killing net zero.
Yeah, and he wasn't going to be able to catch the returning rocket either.
I want to snort 900 kilos of cocaine by the end of next week. Here's why that plan likely won't pan out.
Because he’s a liar.
I know how to win the lottery… I promise to tell you at the end of next year.
Masterful gambit sir.
Maybe Elon and Trump should hitch a ride on the next SpaceX “launch”. Just sayin’…
Rocket go boom
He could fix earth instead of trying to go to a place without oxigen. Also, Trump is taking away all the environmental restrictions for businesses.
what if Mars wont accept immigrant's?
Is "next year" the equivalent of "two weeks" for Elon?
Expecting "two weeks". Instead they get...
Next year, next five years, next ten years, everything's coming in the future, just keep giving him money
It's NOT a plan. It's never been a plan. It's a grift. THAT is why it isn't going to happen. He's not a genius. He's never invented anything. He's never going to.
His desire always outpaces reality. Think self-driving car, DOGE cuts, etc.
It's unbelievable.
It is never going to happen! Stop the idiot polluting the atmosphere with his ridiculous oversized penises coming to early!
The technology is probably there, but Elon ain't all there. He's trying to get JUST ONE of them to work properly, instead of doing what NASA and Boeing did back in the 1960s and made sure everything was tested on the ground first. Because "his way is faster" or some shit.
“Likely” won’t pan out? Ah, bless your heart.
"likely" LMAO God it must be nice to just constantly make shit up and have the press print it
He just had the 8th Starlink Explosion today.
I hope you guys explain that the giant explosions he keeps making are not the best way to send cargo
Yes.
Stenographers at CNN ever ask a tough question of anyone? It took eight years from the time Kennedy announced that the US, was going to the moon, to the time they landed in 1969! Musk, and his private enterprise show, have been at this for twelve years, and not much to show at all #braggadocio
Because he has demonstrated over and over again that he is absolutely full of shit and yet you supposedly serious journalists continue to treat every rancid arse belch as a serious statement?
If I crashed my car as many times as this guy has blown up a rocket, my license would be revoked. Must be nice instead to be rewarded with billions in tax dollars for continuous catastrophic failure.
Cargo to Mars in 2026? C’mon, be serious. No way. Or in 2028…or 2030…blah blah blah
No one is going to Mars anytime soon.
If everyone chips in one dollar, can we send Elon to Mars? Like, everyone on Earth not just the US.
He’s got to find somewhere to dump all the Tesla Cybertrucks
uh ya because he’s a grifting liar lol. people who aren’t very gullible been knowing this for years.
I am hoping that he will be on that cargo ship.
Since "ACME Rockets Division" haven't even got one to Earth orbit yet, there's no way Mars is going to happen for at least 5 years.
Stop doing PR for the most boring man in the world who just lies
Is it because he can't stop his rockets from exploding? Is it the exploding rockets? Is it?
He was supposed to send TWO of them in 2022, and TWO more in 2024, plus two more in 2024 with PEOPLE on them. Gee, I wonder what happened? 🤣 How much can one man over promise and under deliver until society's collective bullshit meter goes off like a fire alarm? I guess we're not there yet.
I didn’t read it. It won’t pan out because Elon Musk is a Vaporware Salesman. How many times have his companies sailed past his own stupid, arbitrary deadlines?
Why does this need an article? Man who continually promises shit he doesn’t deliver makes new promise….thats all you need.
What clickbait shit. They don't have a rocket that works. He lies constantly and the SEC and stock exchanges never hold him accountable. Y'all just give him free press like a bunch of idiots.
I don’t know how any of you can actually speak on television with Trump and Musk’s dicks so far down your throats.
Musk is a conman, and his companies are a Ponzi scheme that's stealing our tax dollars.
leave Britney alone, CNN
Life can not be sustained on Mars. jesus fucking christ
I checked last time he blew up a ship, Mars doesn't have the makings of water. They're gonna shuttle some Evian, oh wait, the earth will be destroyed. I'm sure AI will be right on the solution
