It's funny when people react to this as if it is saying that nothing else exists in film. There are tons of other films out there to choose from. There are more great non-franchise, non-remake, non-sequel films out there than ever. But yeah, those ones are popular.

While movies from existing IPs have been around for virtually the entire existence of cinema, it's nonetheless true that they dominate box office in a way that didn't used to be the case. It's just become really hard for original movies to make biggity bux.

Original material has many more outlets than movie theaters. Leaving movie theaters with mostly either existing IPs or those creators looking for the bygone prestige of a theatrical release.

Hollywood is a sausage factory. Once in a while there come writers and movie directors with an original idea and they have to fight tooth and nail to get their movie done. If the movie gets done and is successful, then there will be endless sequels etc.
