As much as I want to appreciate BR for its cinematic impact, I read the manga version and despite being over the top ridiculous, I find it better than the acting of BR.

I totally feel that. Plus, the art in the manga is SO GOOD! The way that they frame characters in panels is sometimes crazy-cinematic in a way that totally does it for me. Plus, hot take, but I think Kiriyama and Kawada are both cooler in the manga (though they are definite highlights of the movie).
Absolutely. Also great that the manga has time to explore nearly every kid’s backstory so you see how and why they all are doing what they’re doing, good and evil, sympathetic and not.
For sure; that’s part of why I prefer the director’s cut over the theatrical version of the movie (aside from the epilogues at the end of the director’s cut, which I don’t love): it gives a few more scenes of backstory for what happened before the game began, and all that stuff is really great.
Watching the movie (either version) vs reading the manga is sort of like watching DBZ vs DBZ Kai in the sense that one version has a lot of “unnecessary” stuff that slows the pace of the story, but that stuff is what makes you actually care about the characters.
The one huge advantage I’d say the movie has over the manga is Takeshi Kitano, though. He absolutely steals every scene he’s in, and the layers of his performance are really impressive- I love his subtle little bits of physical comedy; like, at one point he slips slightly in the rain, and it’s great.
Read the novel. Gave me a whole new meaning for Born to Run.
I didn’t even know that there’s a novel!! 🤩 Thanks for the heads up!
