I’m saying I was crew on a ship that had a lot of child passengers and this is the training specifically for a situation when a child might fall over. Don’t like it? Sorry, smarter people than either of us figured this out ages ago.

And in that situation your training is almost certainly asking you to prioritise the many children on the boat verses the single child in the water. Safety protocols tend to do that.

The reason it's a training is it's not intuitive that it works like this. It's like not pouring water on a grease fire. People do it all the time because they panic and they think it will work. And sometimes you *can* put out a grease fire with water. But mostly you'll burn your house down.

The other children on the ship would not be in danger from me jumping in the ocean. There were other crew. The point is the child in the water would be further endangered by me jumping in after them because now the reduced crew have to save two people and don't know where either of them are.

Which is precisely my point. The calculus is different re saving one child re the entirety and you being a crew member with collective responsibility vs an adult. Your training doesn’t translate to this particular situation. Also I doubt your employer wants sued if you drown…

I can see that this is not really going anywhere. At least grab a life ring before jumping overboard.

his kid climbed over the railing and fell off a massive ship hes just a guy. he’s not trained on how to deal with a kid falling overboard and he very likely saved his kid’s life. why be a naysayer when it fucking worked and he helped save his kid?

If someone managed to put out a grease fire by dumping water on it, wouldn't you feel obligated to let people know that this usually doesn't work and tell them the proper way to deal with that situation?

in this case he treaded water for 10 minutes, in which time his child would likely have drowned. idk there’s a right way to do things maybe but i’d call this a good dad.
