Prosperous warren of Nazi bunnies could actually refer to two different warrens in that book. I would probably describe the one you're referencing as more of a creepy cult warren based around death by wires.

I think the situation here is that Newsom is one of the few Democrats actively and publicly fighting back. So maybe, other Democrats who have better politics than him should also fight back?
Dr. Alc (@alcoremortis.bsky.social) reply parent
The GOP might support getting rid of RFK Jr if they only have to deal with Vance, which would be a win in my book.

The pathway figure messes me up the most. Like those are often hard to understand if you're not familiar with the pathway to begin with, but I feel like either I'm having a stroke or the person who made the figure was having a stroke when I try to make sense of it.

I write how I talk and I have and will drop words like obsequious, pleonasm, and chiral into casual conversation. Nobody's ever gotten mad about it, at most they've been curious about the meaning.

I don't mind long series that will never have a "finishing book" (I am a Pratchett fan after all), but I'm hoping the trend goes more towards no cliffhangers unless the next book is already written or has significant notes.

It's hard to do things with friends when my schedule is nearly a perfect inverse of theirs. I work on the weekends and in the evenings, there simply isn't any time.

I'm not even a film critic and rarely analyze films (and when I do, it's usually because they were particularly bad) and there's just a lot of fun romps pre-1990. Any Marx Bros film, any Hitchcock, any Errol Flynn film, The Apartment, Desk Set, His Girl Friday, etc
Dr. Alc (@alcoremortis.bsky.social) reply parent
There are over 10 worthwhile Hitchcock movies from 1950-1960 and then also other people who were making movies during that period.

Dr. Alc (@alcoremortis.bsky.social) reply parent
A Dyson sphere around THE SOLAR SYSTEM??? You’d need more material than exists in the solar system just to make a sphere of matter that size, let alone the rare materials necessary to make it a data center.

Okay I think going backwards, it goes Bohr>Pauli>Kemmer>Salam>Gilbert>Horvitz>my advisor. So the change over from physics to biology was with Walter Gilbert.
Dr. Alc (@alcoremortis.bsky.social) reply parent
Sometimes, we biologists would track down our “science lineage” (basically which labs our advisors studied in, which labs their advisors studied in, etc) and somehow, despite me being a biologist, I am a direct scientific descendent of Bohr. Knowing my advisor, this suddenly makes a lot of sense.

My dad refused to let me read his favorite mystery series until I was 18 because of the sex scenes. They ended up being ludicrously tame compared to the ones I’d already accidentally stumbled on by reading books with swords on the cover.
Dr. Alc (@alcoremortis.bsky.social) reply parent
The only classic sci-fi that I think everyone should read right now is Neuromancer. Mostly because we're well on our way to living it and it's good to be prepared. Other than that, pick something that sounds fun. I found some great books as a kid by reading any book with a sword on the cover.

Maybe I'm overly optimistic, but I feel more people would be more open to paying taxes if they received an itemized breakdown of where the money was going. Or it'd wake people up when they see that $5000 is going to the military and $2 is going to cancer research.

If someone managed to put out a grease fire by dumping water on it, wouldn't you feel obligated to let people know that this usually doesn't work and tell them the proper way to deal with that situation?
Dr. Alc (@alcoremortis.bsky.social) reply parent
I can see that this is not really going anywhere. At least grab a life ring before jumping overboard.
Dr. Alc (@alcoremortis.bsky.social) reply parent
The reason it's a training is it's not intuitive that it works like this. It's like not pouring water on a grease fire. People do it all the time because they panic and they think it will work. And sometimes you *can* put out a grease fire with water. But mostly you'll burn your house down.
Dr. Alc (@alcoremortis.bsky.social) reply parent
The other children on the ship would not be in danger from me jumping in the ocean. There were other crew. The point is the child in the water would be further endangered by me jumping in after them because now the reduced crew have to save two people and don't know where either of them are.
Dr. Alc (@alcoremortis.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m saying I was crew on a ship that had a lot of child passengers and this is the training specifically for a situation when a child might fall over. Don’t like it? Sorry, smarter people than either of us figured this out ages ago.
Dr. Alc (@alcoremortis.bsky.social) reply parent
You’re probably right lol.
Dr. Alc (@alcoremortis.bsky.social) reply parent
I’ve done extensive training in this when I was crew on a ship that largely had child passengers.
Dr. Alc (@alcoremortis.bsky.social) reply parent
the people who aren’t spotting throw in every floatation device available while the rescuers get ready to go after them. This creates a trail and gives the person in the water bright orange floats to hold onto which also speeds up the rescue.
Dr. Alc (@alcoremortis.bsky.social) reply parent
That’s why everyone else then throws over every floatation device available. Both to create a trail and to give the person something to hold onto until the rescue can be mounted.
Dr. Alc (@alcoremortis.bsky.social) reply parent
I’ve done extensive man overboard training when I worked on an ocean going ship that primarily had children as clients. Keeping track of the person who fell over speeds up the rescue process to a minute or so. We also throw over every floatation device available to give them aid in floating.

Dr. Alc (@alcoremortis.bsky.social) reply parent
I feel like you're missing what I'm saying. Him jumping could've gotten his child killed.
Dr. Alc (@alcoremortis.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, I get why he did it, I'm just saying that it was an extremely dangerous thing to do for both himself and his child. Glad it worked out, but I would not recommend it as a good decision.
Dr. Alc (@alcoremortis.bsky.social) reply parent
He put that kid at greater risk by jumping. What if nobody saw the father go over? In the ocean a person can disappear from sight extremely quickly, even an adult. If you see someone go overboard, you have to keep them in *constant* line of sight or they're gone forever.
Dr. Alc (@alcoremortis.bsky.social) reply parent
Don't jump off a boat after someone who has fallen overboard, seriously. Even if it's your child. Maybe even especially if its your child. It makes it harder for the rescuers to locate either of you because you can't direct them to the person who fell overboard or throw floating items to them.
