My dad refused to let me read his favorite mystery series until I was 18 because of the sex scenes. They ended up being ludicrously tame compared to the ones I’d already accidentally stumbled on by reading books with swords on the cover.

Yeah my parents never banned books (cuz they knew that would be the next thing I read specifically cuz they told me no). Rather they just kept on top of what I was reading and talked with me about it. They taught me how to think through choosing books instead of choosing for me, too.

My current policy is to content note them for my kid. So far he's chosen to skip the ones with sex scenes. I'm no longer content noting for death. Just sex and particularly distributing violence.
