I’m just a simple country lawyer but comparing the 2024 general election electorate to the 2025 Democratic primary electorate seems a bit like apples to oranges. Can’t really show voters swinging Democratic or changing their minds with that.

The best faith interpretation I can come up with is that in such a heavily registered Dem city like NYC, the Venn diagram overlap of the two electorates is actually much larger than other cities in the country, so broad trends can be drawn. But def a stretch!

Mamdani doesn’t have a good option for an apple-to-apples comparison on the Affordability question. He didn’t ask Trump voters after their NY Republican primary choice basis, since Trump already wrapped up the primary in 2024 by the time NY came along. He’s listening, and Affordability drove choice.

Comparing how he did v Trump and then comparing how he did vs Cuomo and E Adams. That he won districts that Trump won is less relevant since that was a general and this is a Dem primary.

Half of what he was talking about was the 2021 Dem primary, as he clearly said. I don’t think he was as clear, but I thought he was also talking about the Dem vote in 2024. Still not primary voters, but there’s obviously overlap. The entire new-voter section was of course relevant.

I think he only makes a small comparison to Trump, he also speaks about Adams, Cuomo, and first-time voters. And the context was about bringing voters back to the Democratic party. It's no mystery or secret that Kamala reached too far across the isle and alienated large portions of her base.

And to this day, those alienated Democrats are still blamed and derided by others in the same party. 🤷

You're assuming different people voted for Trump than voted for him. He's assuming they're (at least) largely the same. Who should we assume has better data?

I think he's making the implicit argument that those trump votes were democratic defections and he was able to win them back over. he could be wrong but it's not a simple category mistake I don't think.

They actually know that they are. This is quick search, but others have broken down the Dem turnout for Trump in those areas.

This is technically true, but I'd also guess that Trump's general election performance is a really good proxy for ideological splits within Dem primaries, at least in NYC where the primary is the election that matters and many people, across the ideological spectrum, are registered as Dems.

I hear you on the apples to oranges comparison but isn't it still noteworthy to point out the change in the "trend" over the last 7 months. Post 2024 election coverage highlighted NYCs and the rest of the countries swing towards Trump. Mamdani's win show much of these people aren't the MAGA faithful

He’ll win the general; I have no worry about that. What I am worried about—the more so after watching this—is post-election. He’s said, repeatedly: “We can’t just be against something, we have to be FOR something.” Donald Trump will do his best to make sure “fighting against” is all he does.

Check the news. Republicans just passed a federal law yanking health care away from millions, driving up energy prices, worsening inflation, and most importantly, expanding the police state disappearing people by a factor of 15. Zohran’s mayorship will be dominated by that, throughout his city.

New Yorkers‘ “cost of living” will be made worse—much, much worse—throughout Zohran’s term, and he’ll be able to do nothing to stop the majority of it. The only thing he’ll be known for, as long as Donald Trump is president, is what he did to fight AGAINST that. Not the wonderful policy he’s FOR.

Zohran is a generational political talent. Clearly he’s skilled at communication and campaigning. But he’s yet to show me he has the toughness it takes to lead not just New York, but be a leader for democracy, in its desperate defense, in these dark times. Hopefully he will, soon.
