Well, it might come in useful in situations like if you're in a Manhattan office building and someone is coming in to do some murder. Seems like it could be handy for that sort of situation. Plus, it's not as if homicidal maniacs stick to just one zip code. In fact, many have been known to wander.
Nah, the person a gun is most likely to kill its owner, accident or suicide. Unless you're part of a well regulated militia doing a lot of training you're probably not going to be much use surprised in a fire fight. Not giving loads of people guns means fewer crazy people get them too.
Unless they're law enforcement or military, because those professions are widely commended for their sound judgment and never produce homicidal maniacs or people prone to violence. As for training, I don't know a single gun owner who isn't in favor of it if it's provided at no cost.
