And this shit is why I only subscribe to Canadian media - they may have a pro-Canada bias, but much less of a R or D bias. Our media is hopelessly compromised, with a few rare exceptions.
Corporate Fascism
Who is he focused on "rebuilding trust" with? The 160,000 subscribers who departed recently? The remaining 90,000, many of whom are on unprofitable discount deals & are biding their time to cancel? Or the current powers that be in Georgetown, aping the manners of their betters?
The Washington Post was my hometown paper growing up in the 70s, and that always made me proud. Now they’re cheerleaders for fascism. What a fall. So glad I cancelled my subscription last year.

What is this persons bias? Trumper?
And just like that the WAPO died
He's tasked with providing the most influence for Bezos in the country. bsky.app/profile/benm...
Funny this schmuck thinks what's gonna draw people is more opinions. I'm betting a head of lettuce lasts longer. 🙄
We will hit the ground running with our new monthly newsletter!
Update: he is a bootlicker and fascism enabler. Cancel your @washingtonpost.com subscriptions.
Oh, they’re never seeing my dollars again.
“Be sure to have fake optimism about the downfall of democracy and our country….”
Maybe we need a market that lets us go short on subscriptions to major publications. I would like to subscribe to WaPo @ around $-50.
To anyone still on Twitter X or subscribing to the WaPo, JUST QUIT It’s that simple. Q U I T
Done, both
Done and done months ago, plus quit Amazon.
And the NYT
No one gives a shit about their opinion section. Give us the freaking news you idiot!
Right?! Just get rid of the Opinion section altogether and use that money to hire more real news reporters. Who cares anymore what a newspaper opinion section says?
I see how this could be misread. To be clear, the idiot I was referring to is the WAPO opinion editor. Sorry.
💯 With the Internet and fewer people reading actual papers, opinion pieces have, unfortunately, lead to worse media literacy, IMO. Example: Over the past decade, I can't tell you how many right wingers have linked me opinion pieces as sources...
the talent exodus will continue, as will the post’s inexorable march toward becoming a clone of the moonie paper
Just about everyone valuable has left now…still hoping Carol Leonnig jumps ship shortly
"Donald Trump seems to relish causing chaos. But what if there's a method to the madness? Adam O'Neal, our Washington Correspondent, explains the “madman theory” The WaPo cannot be taken seriously when they have Trump apologists like Adam O'Neal in leadership!
I found that article really interesting when someone ss it, but for all the wrong reasons. Time for them to go in the bin with all the other sycophants
I've heard other Trumpers do this, too; try to read the tea leaves to find unprompted explanations for his horrifically self-obsessed behavior. They're like, "If you look at it from this one ultra-obscure exeedingly narrow angle, IT'S GENIUS!" 🙄
Ever more right wing...a threatening email was sent by publisher Will Lewis last week to the remaining staff, saying if they did not agree with the authoritarian regime in the White House, they should take the buyout and go...or get fired in a few weeks was implied.
So what is his agenda, really? To push the WP even further into the propaganda machine? Or pull it away?
Seems lovely, I hope he dies in a sponsored robocab because it followed an AI hallucination straight into the fucking sea 🫡
On Bastille Day no less. More heads will roll at WaPo, but whose is the question. Most of the journalists/columnists with ethics have already skedaddled to a less fascist employer.
Another tabloid added to State Media
Oh, so he's proficient in speaking without actually saying anything?
So he's turning it into USA Today circa the Reagan years? Yeah...
"popular, vibrant and influential"—is that what we're calling bigoted, incendiary rightwing propaganda now?
I cancelled my subscription last year along with thousands of my new best friends, and I don’t see him changing that. He can have fun creating more wreckage at a once-great, has-been media outlet, already ruined by an overweening oligarch, but it won’t make any difference to me. 🥱
"The twin pillars"--free markets and personal liberties (except for brown people, of course). Now that I've located alternative sources for comics and obituaries, there's nothing more I miss about my formerly beloved hometown paper.
LOL
🎶Adam? Adam? Who d'fuck is Adam? 🎶
Wow, a scoop!
This must be Bezos' message to trump that he's all in. There will likely be some defections.
I am a discerning reader who knows bull**** when I hear it.
I wish I could cancel my WaPo subscription several thousand more times...
"It won't be easy, but we have a real opportunity to build the most popular, vibrant and influential opinion section in the country..."
No chance in fucking hell. We used to be daily readers.
Are they still employing Marc Theissen and George Will? If so....I really don't see it happening.
What about News, adam. What about the thing that constitutes 44% of the word "newspaper"?
Haha. Nobody wants opinions
The Future Washington Post will have a circulation of 5 people, all billionaires. The billionaires will open the paper directly to the opinion section, which will be full of pieces talking about what a good job the 5 billionaires are doing. Customer satisfaction will be very high
Now I get it.
This the "Riveting Storytelling for All America" paper? Gonna take some serious work before they're treated seriously again. Weekly World News has more influence.
The public has been clamoring for a bunch of tools defending billionaires. Definitely an underserved market niche.
Reached into the fishbowl and pulled out some words!
"We are going full nazi"
"My top priority will be to significantly increase the reach and effect of our work."
Based on WaPo's performance over the last year, I'm going to say it's going to take an awful lot to "significantly increase the reach" of their shotty ass work.
I want to talk to one conservative that subscribes because of this effort. One.
Rightwing propaganda has basically called the Post and the NYT the seed of Satan for decades so NYT and Post executives are positive these propagandized dolts will flood their subscriptions.
That’s not the goal
Increase reach = cower to MAGA to get the MAGA Republicans to start loving the WP?
Increasing the reach by appealing to people who don't read, and who consider TikTok videos subtle and complex.
Let’s hope you don’t get silenced or sidelined by your big boss. Democracy has been dying at WAPO lately!
"The changes we have planned are not marginal. They will be ambitious and thorough...we won't let sentimentality slow down much-needed reform."
“Humanity” replaced with “sentimentality”. C’mon people! Don’t be sappy! We need cold blooded heroes who can rise above soft emotions, empathy, weakness!! Orwell, Overton windows, neuromarketing, psyops and all that, coming at us with the full force of an out-of-control fuel tanker. I’m scared.
Sounds bad.
"I know this represents a shift for many of you, and maybe even an unwelcome one for some, but simply being reconciled to these changes is not enough. We want those who stick with us to be genuinely enthusiastic about the new direction and focus."
Love the strategy of dangling an unspoken "or else" to provoke 'genuine' enthusiasm.
very clear threat of be on board or say bye
"My way or the highway, but I'm not telling you what my way is other than it demands your complete loyalty!"
What Ben is saying is: "We're going to shove some more right wing bullshit down your throats to appease an imbecile and a clown that wants to be a Trillionaire."
What exactly is the new direction and focus?
Yikes. WaPo continues to circle the ethical drain.
Sounds like Pam Bondi addressing the DoJ.
"The rightward lurch will continue until morale improves". Yeah good luck with that.
"We are gonna be way more right wing, guys."
Since that is a word salad if I worked there I'd be sending out resumes pronto.
Or hiring a decent copy edtor
"Jawohl, mein Fuhrer!"
"We want those who stick with us to be genuinely enthusiastic"
He managed to say basically nothing about what the new direction exactly is. Wonder why that is?
He said enough. free market, personal liberty are conservative buzz words that means let companies do whatever the fuck they want and don’t regulate guns. He’s all in for fascism. Watch.
He specifically said what the new direction will be. Did you not read the actual letter?
I saw little beyond the vague "advocating for free markets and personal liberties" shtick that Bezos had already spelled out a while back. So not a new direction then?
Exactly
Needs to be read in fascist coded language. The implication of "radical change" together with who this person is is that the opinion section has been too left-wing. Now place that next to the "free market" semantically null but RW-coded wording, and out pops the fascist propaganda mandate.
Kissing the ring all day everyday and selling it as FACT rather than opinion.
"... simply being reconciled to these changes is not enough"-exemplifies that if Fascism is left to fester long enough, only enthusiastic participation will be acceptable-& not just in the WAPO opinion section.
“Only enthusiastic gargling of Trump’s balls will be acceptable.”
Gross.
"Any opinion the writer wants so long as it's ours," to borrow from Henry Ford.
Sounds very second round financing to me. The framing of “Were moving forward; you’re a loser dinosaur” is so familiar.
IOW, my way or the highway. What could possibly go wrong?
Correction Except for sentimental refusal to consider that market failures are real
the changes we have planned are not for the marginalized
From "democracy dies in darkness" to "whatever it takes to get more people to read us."
Reality: They have no opportunity to be the most popular, vibrant and influential opinion section in the country. The Post will continue to bleed subscribers and readers and its reach will be even further diminished. And the Republican cult won’t subscribe to it because they don’t fucking read.
You do know your oligarch controlled media propaganda rag provides crucial support for the fascist regime. Not much else to be expected of Sulzberger and Kahn. They do love their Trump. Your bullshit ‘plan’ to aid even further is more worthless drivel. I hope the money is worth it.
and they call this place an echo chamber
Such boldness assumes that WaPo readers actually want to read this AI slop & poorly reasoned takes. Their subscriber base suggests otherwise. The Fox model shows that the only way to sustain engagement with this sludge is to tilt full-on propaganda. At least they have a head start with Thiessen.
Don't see how that's possible while keeping the Bezos edict about "personal liberties and free markets" in place. People on the left are put off by the rightward swerve, while people on the right who are distrustful of mainstream media aren't going to be won over by neoliberalism.
So much nonsense from the very start. This promises only worse.
lol hard to have influence when you alienated your core readership to try and infinitely grow to people who don’t care or don’t like your paper. Squandered the influence in order for short term profit, nice work with that long term thinking there Jeff. You made us do COEs for less.
"vibrant" ... hmm I'm sensing T. Chatterton Williams is receiving a page at this very moment
"Democray has died while we are removing the light bulbs"
The kind of vacuous nonsense I've come to expect from them
The only good opinion section is no opinion section
I think that media outlets that want to be taken seriously as journalism outlets should just get rid of their opinion sections entirely.
Kevin's opinions are the only opinions allowed, obviously.
I’ve been saying that about the fall of MSNBC - stop sitting around spouting opinions and do some hard hitting journalism. Guess that’s just too much to ask. They don’t want to pay for that
People don’t want to tune in and think of an opinion for themselves is the problem. They want validation of an opinion they already hold.
Mark this.❗️It’s another attack on free media and will end up pushing Bezos’ Trump bootlicking ideology. M0ther fu6ker - are there seriously no billionaires out there that love this country more than their money? The media is being taken over, systematically and rapidly.
Just JB
Whois?
Governor of Illinois JB Pritzker
F off Adam
An end to woke vegetarian meals in the cafeteria and no more free coffee?
Couple quick questions for Adam. Is the right to an abortion a personal liberty? Are tarrifs a barrier to free markets?
and I guess they'll come out forcefully for trans rights, freedom of speech of protestors, academic freedom, etc
Bezos is renaming the Washington Post to MAGA Post.
The ultra rich are above consequences and can act with utter impunity
Megan McArdle clones will write 25% of columns.
Oh boy, I can't wait for an even worse selection of psychic damage inducing drivel from a collection of albino cave troglodytes!
I quit subscribing to the Post when it was revealed that they killed the Alito flag story for 3 years until the Wall Street Journal revealed it. There was a Post reporter on Alito's street knocking on doors right after rumors first surfaced. The post decided to sit on the story
