It matters who is waiting in the wings because, as the article says, Powell's term is up in a year anyway. It matters very much who is waiting in the wings.

Is it CNN's fault that people read just the headlines a lot of the time? I go back and forth, but end up saying "if people refuse to be well informed, we don't deserve democracy." Democracy absolutely must have most people meet their duty. In any case, CNN explicitly states in the article:

Cool story and you prove my point. Many people see the headline, don’t read, and assume Trump has the power to fire him.

Well, I guess the headline never contains the full story, so you can always critique on the headline. I didn't see the headline specifying when the person waiting in the wings would manifest. So if a person makes an assumption, here, it is their fault.

The headline should have never been written that way. That’s the point.

"While many experts say the president does not in fact have the power to fire the Fed chief due to policy differences"

Why are you sticking up for CNN? Curious.
