Yeah I look through the profiles before blocking, but you do need to keep an eye on the blocklists you subscribe to. I've heard (but not verified) some shady things occurring. My blocking generally tends to be if I see junk posting as well.

And when someone you know, trust, and otherwise enjoy stumbles and engages, mute the thread and move on, mute the thread and move on. If they are very close to you, DM and gently nudge/support them through the reflexive impulse. Give them the little private boost to help them extract themselves.
