“I could explain Hasan Piker’s politics to you, but that’s entirely irrelevant. The bold, all caps, underlined point is that a high profile, US-born American citizen was detained on Sunday by ICE for, it would seem, the crime of speech.”
“I could explain Hasan Piker’s politics to you, but that’s entirely irrelevant. The bold, all caps, underlined point is that a high profile, US-born American citizen was detained on Sunday by ICE for, it would seem, the crime of speech.”
We’re gonna have to cast societal pressure and shame on anyone working for I.C.E. Along with developing interference and opposition tactics. I’m emailing my Mayor, State Senate, and Governor about banning ICE facilities in my state. But we need on the ground action at least constant disruption.
Btw Societal pressure is denouncing ICE, politically framing them as bad guys whose only function is violence, banning the from fast food, restaurants, entertainment centers, and calling in & if need be cutting of relationships with ICE officials. This will all be hard but we need to do it.
If fascists could be controlled by a haphazard hit-or-miss occasional "shaming", they already wouldn't exist. That's not an effective plan. We need to get DEM voters to switch to the Green Party. It's a difficult, long-term project, but it's the ONLY credible path that actually reach our goals.
It is part of an effective plan and your plan wouldn’t work unless we go to a popular vote system and parliamentary elections. None of your plan involves societal consequences for ppl (yes that includes Dems & left leaning white ppl)
Mine does and historically consequences/shame are the only thing that has made white Americans and other communities even think twice about engaging in historic violence against other communities, mainly Black. Racism and other bigotry played a huge part in Trump’s win.
Outside of convincing white Americans who care to become as dedicated to the cause as John Brown. Public mockery and structured societal shaming have their place in correcting where we are. It’s not the ONLY method. It is one of the most likely to happen and effective.
Simply empowering the Green Party which like the Socialist Party have their own racism and other bigotry issues is not practical. Democrats are a party supported more by non-white people than white Americans. So it’ll just be taking the few allies we have and scattering them.
Also the green and socialist parties would have to make their case now and gain a majority following. Not have people try to convince citizens to support them despite their lack of political success for decades. If they can’t entice ppl now they’ll never succeed.
NO election is restricted to prior results; historically BAD results despite incredibly favorable conditions is what the DEMs just showed! It's a reasoning error to think change can never come in a "winner-takes-all" election system: DEMs work HARD to suppress Greens, `cuz a FLIP is already NEAR !
Greens have issues with Black people, the base for Democrats. Despite that they can’t capture white voters nor can they get a coalition of minority voters. This is literally the perfect time to recruit voters and they can’t even do that despite record low confidence in both political parties.
??? So... nigh non-existent unspecified "racism" is a reason to hate the Green Party, but NOT THE DEMOCRATS? If "racism" is the criteria to judge these two parties by, you'd probably need 22 centillion Green Parties to equal just 1 DEM party worth of racism.
The same way "Honey-Crusted HFCS Puffs are a ᵖaᵣt of ᵗhᵢs nᵤtʳiₜiᵒuₛ ᵇrₑaᵏfasᵗ ": If the breakfast was *actually* nutritious, it wouldn't be in there at all. That's like saying the way you get someone to marry you is to denigrate them at every turn. There are NO human beings who comply after that.
The ICEtapo is out of control.
I mean, yes, but also his name is Hasan.
Well that's terrible, although reading the article -"Obviously Piker is famous" This shouldn't happen to anyone free speech is the first fucking one and I doubt they're detaining US citizens that are openly Neo Nazis. Also fame is subjective.
"I doubt they're detaining US citizens that are openly Neo Nazis." That's the mic drop.
Ironically not due to his views about #usa but his views about #israel But but but #Freedom 😅😅😅
#RealPeople
So much hubris in his story. 1st is CPB had a clue who he is, 1 of 7.7 mm streamers in a userbase of 240 mm. As if CPB employees spend a ton of time on Twitch. 2nd is a thought they can talk someone out of something like they did their parents that caught them drinking. He was profiled
? Please communicate more clearly, I can't even tell who's side you're on.
My point is that 1) it is silly thinking he was targeted because he is a "personality". As "influential" as he thinks he may be, CBP does not spend time trolling Twitch. His name and appearance was likely why they pulled him in, ergo, profiling, and
2) he proffers he talked his way out of detention, implying a deeply effective argument that Ozturk and Suri did not make (my reference to talking your parents out of punishing you for drinking); CBP does not care about your arguments. Being famous on the internet is like being rich in Monopoly.
erm, I'm not sure he's making that claim… It sounds more like he managed NOT to say something they could twist with a malicious misreading, but also could not control himself by saying nothing at all. But then finally accidently said the magic words after racking his brain `cuz he's not used to it
But don't ever make the mistake of thinking the internet is separate from the rest of life. What happens online INTENSELY affects the rest of reality, *especially* in politics, which is directly what Hasan is involved in.
I'll never forget the night I was in a city council public hearing about whether or not a very tepid anti-discrimination ordinance would be voted in. Someone on the council reprimanded a clique of mormon bigots in the audience who were involved in a nasty real-time group chat on twitter.
They were in the same room as me! I couldn't believe they doing that, not just because it was wrong, but because the idea never occurred to them that anyone else might find out.
Well, I say there isn't enough information to know with certainty, either way. But surely it's not "silly" to merely wonder if this fascist government is *specifically* trying to harm its critics, because we've seen LOTS of that already, elsewhere!
Hands Off Our Hasan!
"But his name is Hasan, he must be bad!" Coup the coup!
@schiff.senate.gov @raskin.house.gov @warren.senate.gov @sanders.senate.gov @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social @aoc.bsky.social @repjasmine.bsky.social @vanhollen.senate.gov
Anyone had a look how many Proud Boys, klansmen and other bigots, racists and authoritarians work at ICE?
This is why bigotry & fascism need to be class 1 felonies in our society, so we can permanently end their careers & prevent them from ever entering government service or successfully running for office in the first place. Their victims deserve the equal, peaceful, quiet enjoyment of public space.
Not quite. It’s why you people need to ALL take to the streets. It’s well past a “strongly worded letter” stage. All this armchair activism is useless. Do something or accept the tyranny. There is no middle ground. Enough with this “there oughtta be a law”, stand up for yourselves
Yes; that's just how we'll stop the fascism from happening again after we use direct action to put normal humans into seats of power. We aren't gonna go through all the hard work needed to purge the evil fascists only to leave existing conditions in place that might ever let fascism happen again.
Well you say that but this isn’t the first round of authoritarians in charge, is it?
Exactly: We need to do the things that will permanently break the cycle once-and-for-all.
If you openly support terrorists you shouldn't be surprised that CBP is asking some uncomfortable questions about it.
📌 #fightICE
I have so many questions about that story......
You can re watch his stream from yesterday where he explains that the migration agents where extra weird asking questions about his view about Donald duck
Wrongthink
You have to be dumb as rocks to have this take. 1. ICE detains man. 2. Man waives right to remain silent. 3. ICE officers ask follow-up questions based on information man volunteered to give them. Low IQ leftists: "hAsAn WaS DeTaInEd FoR tHe CrImE oF sPeEcH"
That probably did not happen. They have a list of pro-palis that they keep on hand. When you get your picture taken at customs, they match that face with whatever list or lists they have.
I've been detained by ICE before and it went exactly as Hasan described. They have quotas to check X number of people for each flight returning to the country, especially if you've been out of the country for a while. There's no reason to assume malevolent intent when this is just standard OP.
Isn't Occam's Razor they preselected his name because of its Arabic etymology? These agencies driving cross country to raid a Home Depot parking looking for day laborers aren't the best of best.
Considering they asked him directly about stuff he says on stream, no.
If accurate (I hadn't seen quotes claimed said until now) then they at a minimum had far more of a brief on him than one would reasonably expect (questioned+minor border search myself). Perhaps his brief was another forward from the activist groups seeding names and bullshit "receipts".
??? I thought they burned up more than 2 hours of his time, a crazy amount of fascist "we can abuse the process to do an extra-legal punishment we can't otherwise get away with!" ? No 𝚕𝚎𝚐𝚒𝚝𝚒𝚖𝚊𝚝𝚎 border security could EVER require that much time to verify the normalcy of Hasan Piker.
Missing the purpose for which people get pulled aside by those exercising police or police-like powers. It isn't to verify someone's innocence or harmlessness. It's an exercise in trying to prove someone is "guilty" enough to be held. Why questioning goes in circles and they feign empathy.
If they are getting fed briefs by these anti-activists extremist groups (did exactly that in the Harvard case) then I would expect a lot of circular questioning trying to instigate an unintentional verbal slip. Enough to justify a hold.
We sure he’s even telling the truth? Something about this really seems off to me and it’s been bugging me since I first read your article last night. Influencers (and wannabes) get a high off attention & the potential for making money. It is not uncommon to stretch the truth for clicks and gain.
What a silly baseless comment. At least have a single fact to point to. ICE is real, the MAGA take over of the police state is real. Denial is not helpful.
Really? CF47 regime has already sent people, legally permitted to be here to El Salvador for what they may do. They're kidnapping & disappearing people, US citizens w/o due process. He still has a right to free speech even if for clicks and followers; still entitled to 1A & 5A Rights.
I personally do not trust Trump's government officials because an Internet personality has views I may disagree with.
Maybe you should read more about Hasan.
Or just read more in general, tbh
In normal times I would assume so too, but the US currently restricts freedom of speech and freedom of religion. So, yeah, totally plausible what happened to Hassan Piker.
This has happened to so many people at the border since Trump took office. His story isn’t unique.
Exactly. His experience isn't his alone.
So CBP has some kind of database that includes political views of Americans? Or was he recognized
They must have flagged his name even though he was in the preclearance lane. And yeah they must have a dossier on him to ask such specific questions about his commentary.
A database of anyone considered an "extremist" obviously exists at least since the start of the War on Terror
He was recognized/on a list. They knew to ask him about some very specific things that came off stream, so at the very least he was on a list and they were googling him as they talked.
he has the level of notoriety that he has actually butted heads directly with conservative politicians and media figures, so if they were pursuing a policy of political repression then they’d easily be able to pick him out
Canary Mission and Betar. Look them up.
More likely his name got flagged after his recent puff piece in the fashion section of the NYT. That put him on Fox News' radar where a panel of talking heads were criticizing him a bit over a week ago. He had been joking that he'd get arrested now that Fox (& the WH admin watching) knew who he was.
only if you are extremely wealthy streamer hasan piker.
He said he was only doing it because he knows he is in a privileged position and is privileged enough to have the funds to handle a legal situation. So I’d say, no, if you’re not Hasan Piker. No.
I recall him clarifying that he was only able to get away with this because he's rich and famous, and that us normal people shouldn't do this.
Global entry uses facial recognition software.
I remember having some disagreements with Hasan in the past, but this shit is tyranical, this has no place in a democracy, ICE has become the american equivalent of the stasi under this new administration, revolting.
Making an example out of Piker specifically, I fear it could really work to suppress speech against the White House.
I think the focus of narrative around ICE failing to distinguish between "legal" and "illegal" residents is exactly how you perpetuate their roles and existence.
While this is true, I also think in cases like this it's the only way to get more moderate conservatives to wake up and stop supporting this filth. And it's increasingly looking like we'll need their help if we want to avoid violent civil war to keep our rights.
Conservatives don't stop supporting fascists if you use their language and cave in to their views. This is what the Democrats did and they lost terribly. Their world view was built upon indoctrination and can only be dismantled through beute force and gaslighting.
And as a once-middle class, white CIS straight man who was formerly -for half his life- also a Catholic conservative libertarian who watched Glenn Beck and shit all day, I know that though it may not seem like it, there are many out there who are much more three dimensional than you're suggesting.
I had no reason... absolutely no reason to change my views other than the lines I'd drawn in the sand being crossed, and the people I grew to care for being hurt. I had all the privilege, and held the same bitterness that so many other Republicans do. I know it very intimately.
And so while I absolutely agree that we should not be giving them an inch the vast majority of the time, it's also important to recognize how powerful the pipeline of indoctrination they're stuck in is, and how much worse it can get if we don't communicate certain things to them in their terms.
I believe there is a difference between lazily defaulting to the dehumanizing fascist rhetoric of 'legal VS illegal' because you can't be bothered to do better, and knowingly, pointedly using their own language against them (in very specific circumstances) to drive a worthwhile point home.
Not only is this important in journalism, but it's also something we see employed in some of the most effective protest/political art in history; the art that changed minds for those toeing the edge of extremist conservatism.
That's your first mistake, you can't mass produce a one size fits all solution "argument" to challenge their nonsense. What you described can only be applied at a personal level to be detangled by those close to them. Just because it worked for you doesn't mean it's THE solution.
You can't argue your way out of fascism. That's not how it works.
Just some minor details: I don’t think he has 2.8 million Twitch subscribers (which would be paying for a subscription). He does have 2(.8) million followers though. And it makes is sound like 2.8 million people were watching his stream (in reality it was probably closer to 40-50k)
Thank you for clarifying that. That is extremely important to the context of a fairly well-known American citizen being detained by the US government for political speech.
This is flagged as “rude” for some absurd reason.
His fanbase seems to have shown up here. Thus many flaggings.
Lots of thin-skinned hall monitors here, 'tis true
Is that like his thing or does fanbase = haters?
Yeah, no idea why. It’s a bit silly, but who cares?
My account is flagged as rude because I pissed off centrists
Pretty sure it was CBP and not ICE, just FYI. That's according to his own words and it making more sense given he was at an airport after having arrived back from France
CBP pulled him aside, then likely transferred him to ICE.
I just watched it all. He one time, I believe mistakenly, says he was in like an ICE waiting room area before being interrogated but like one minute later specifically states it was a CBP agent asking him questions.
Video should start at about 0:40 - He just says it was CBP youtu.be/RI5FH2vZanQ?...
bsky.app/profile/mari...
Video here should start at 0:40 - He only mentions CBP when he's telling his audience a brief overview of what happened before getting into details. He's not an immigrant so not sure why ICE would have any reason for involvement. He grew up in Turkey but was born here. youtu.be/RI5FH2vZanQ?...
Hmm. Thx.
This quote reminded me of when @sxh.bsky.social and I travelled to Morocco a few years ago. I was working in social media, so without thinking, I put "writer" as my profession. I got a LOT of attention from the border officer, who clearly thought I was a journalist. Guess the US does this too, now.
He could have just told ICE “I’m not speaking to you with a lawyer present.” But…
Yes, he knows that, explained on stream he could have and why he didn't. He wanted to see where it would go, test the waters a bit. Because he knows he is a very privileged public person with a way less chance of him actually ending up behind bars. And he was glad he did.
So his fanbase showed up to this thread that explains a few things.
I did explain, yes. 😜
So you watch like every stream then?
I have him on in the background quite often yes. Hasan is my go to channel for ongoing world news and updates on the state of US and politics. It's informative background noise on my second monitor while I work on other stuff.
There's a lot going on here that's VERY supportive if not blindly.
Your opinion is skewed because he seems often correct and comforting. It's cool to root for guys you like, but it makes you kinda biased. I like a bunch of people too, doesn't mean they're always right or are that famous. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, when others won't understandably.
I mean often correct is the goal no? It is comforting because he IS right a lot of the time. He cites high quality sources and is well educated. So he doesn't pull his statements from his ass, backs up claims with historical (logical) context so he doesn't have to invent reasons to get you to agree.
What does this say about him in your opinion? He always posts an image in a jokingly manner. And yes, X is still the best way to get the biggest online social media reach. It's a necessary evil. Just like how he still streams on Twitch, even when Bezos owns that.
Yes, but you and your fellow fans are disagreeing with people pointing out things in his story and questioning things. You like your dude, that's cool. You give him the benefit of the doubt, cool. However he's your dude, he's not that well known and maybe didn't do things right. This is bias.
In the big respectable takes on this, I see a lot of tut-tutting his foolishness. What I don’t see is any vision of challenging an emerging reality where constitutional rights and lawyering up are not going to protect us. Acts of defiance are going to be smart or safe.
“Piker’s ordeal makes two things clear: one, that Trump is willing to sic agents on media personalities; two, that ordinary citizens and non-citizens alike—and even fellow media people/journalists—should not follow his ill-advised approach to dealing with people with the power to throw you in jail.”
Wait was it ICE? I thought it was CBP at the airport? Same thing?
The C in both of those is for Customs, & it's all part of DHS.
bsky.app/profile/mari...
CPB is the main Border Control & Customs agency. ICE is the enforcement arm, the masked-up, no badges, no warrants #TrumpBrownshirts you’ve seen swarming people in public and snatching them up in unmarked vans & SUVs.
So, what you are basically saying is the same thing people say to Black individuals detained by the police? Comply and be polite and say "Yes, massa"?
Be civil but SHUT UP. Nobody ever should be answering questions without an attorney. He spoke to them at length without insisting on one.
(1) There aren't enough attorneys in the country to take care of all of us as we see our freedom of speech taken away. (2) Most people do not have enough money to hire an attorney.
That doesn't change that it's the correct course of action- it's much more expensive to end up in prison over putting your foot in your mouth and incriminating yourself
If everybody demands representation every time, they'll quickly run out of capacity waiting for enough court-appointed attorneys & they'll need to let the ones detained for harassment go to have room for the ones who might actually be dangerous.
No, they're saying the same thing as the Pot Brothers Attorneys At Law say about what to tell cops. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkN4...
Huh? Where the hell did you get that interpretation from?
Seriously? (1) Most people cannot afford an attorney. (2) There are not enough attorneys in this country to protect ALL of us as our freedom of speech is taken away...
I'm pretty sure it's a bot, DNI with reactions like this
I disagree. He was courageous to push back.
Obviously, normal people shouldn't act like this, but I do think there is value in someone with a profile pushing the issue like this, same as it would have been useful to see a couple congresspeople get arrested for trying to walk into the treasury building a couple weeks back.
+1 High-profile arrests can raise awareness of the stakes and accelerate resistance. I hope more people with platforms and followings (esp. politicians) are willing to risk this for the greater good! That said, his specific choice not to shut the fuck up was foolish, and no one should mimic that.
I think it's tricky. If we ALL act like that, express our views with zero fear, we've got strength in numbers. The regime isn't at the phase where they can arrest ALL of us yet. The problem is, too many people are scared to do that, so any normal people who act like this would be picked off...
It makes a big difference at a port of entry - they have a LOT more latitude to detain & search you at a border crossing than in the rest of the country. Like for instance, detain you for a digital colonoscopy to find anything that might be useful to a "terrorism" investigation, if you admit to...
...having communicated with anyone terrorist-adjacent. Even if that conversation is free speech/journalism protected & isn't a crime, there MIGHT be a single breadcrumb that could help the CIA figure out where to send their next Reaper drone, & you're not going anywhere until they find it.
And if that happens to be enough to suggest you might have "provided material support" to a "terrorist", you're REALLY 🍆'ed.
they are already attempting to conflate speech with material support. The question is whether they have the stomach to dump that on a natural born citizen, and the answer to that is going to redefine how this admin is resisted going forward.
and someone of Hasan's means and stature can bring attention to that, and weather any blowback, much better than some random person who gets grabbed, so I think, while anyone else should shut the fuck up in a situation like this, its good that he ran his mouth and pushed the issue.
It might be good that he was arrested, but it is patently bad that he ran his mouth. He's got a lot of followers who will learn the wrong lesson from that, and they simply don't know any better and will needlessly suffer as a result. Hasan should know better, though.
Except he didn't deliberately run his mouth all the way into making himself a test case so he can escalate the matter & demand SCOTUS actually say the words in public for all to hear. He caught himself in time to get out the same day, which is kinda the worst of both worlds. It makes viewers...
Swarthy? First Name HASAN? Travels a lot? Who cares if he's a US citizen? This is EXACTLY the type of guy DonOLD's crew wants to harass!
Guess he can’t give the President a “free” jet.
But you don't understand! All of this is about ME PERSONALLY and how CORRECT I AM! Boldfaced fascism plays second fiddle to my political scorecard, doncha know
Cool that you decided to make this about your own weird bullshit
Yeah, probably 😊
Weird take
The fact that they have to do the "not gonna talk about his politics" is an unfortunate facet of the world we live in. We could all do better to worry less about our own personap victories and more about the big victory.
I think (but could be misinterpreting your point) that they’re making that qualification for exactly this reason. They’re trying to just cut short all the people who’ll kneejerk to “well Hasan said this/that so he deserves the heat” by just saying up front that it doesn’t fucking matter
Yes.
He was interviewing Mr. Tankus a month ago 🤔. He is one of very few people who really understands how the Federal Reserve "works". youtu.be/onooKPzLJY4?...
It's worth mentioning that they were apparently combing through drama on social media to learn about twitch disciplinary actions against him as well as explicitly asking for his opinion on Donald Trump. They were plainly trying to find an in to hit him with terrorism charges & he was stupid to talk.
Another step on the road to full-blown open fascism and we’re all just gonna watch it happen, doing nothing. We are now officially the “German’s that let it happen”.
I like suggest he sue the ICE officials who detained him for false arrest.
This article wasn't useful, because it contained no new information we didn't already have, and has no viewpoint or opinion that would contrast with anything we don't already think. It's not *wrong*, but it did amount to a waste of time that could have been spent on more effective resistance acts.
It’s outrageous that he was detained and interrogated for speech. It was also a giant mistake on his part to say anything to CBP besides “I want my lawyer”. youtu.be/nWEpW6KOZDs?...
I know it was quite reckless but he was testing the waters and he's also quite selfless.
No he’s not selfless
Hasan is not selfless. He's rich, rather famous, and very arrogant.
He was seizing an opportunity for views, subscriptions, engagement. Nothing more.
with his life? lol
Streamers will go to great lengths for engagement and that was an enormous opportunity. Like, have you seen the internet?
You should delete this
Why
bsky.app/profile/thep...
Witness my journey
Yeah I read the whole thing. If you really "appreciated the insight" you'd delete your post.
Fuck I hate people like you
You really are the angriest canadian
People tend to get angry when dealing with spineless fucking Americans all the time.
No one asked you to deal with me. Take a breath.
you can accuse any war journalist with this. your statement means nothing. and he also gave us some valuable information of what the government may consider acceptable speech. I don't even like Hasan but I don't have a seething hatred for him like many other liberals.
Would you rather not know that he was detained for speech crimes?
I understand your animosity here but this is not the guy to accuse of doing shit for views. Simply admitting there's a genocide in Gaza lost him nearly a third of all his traffic and he has never blinked about it. Let's be real here
Fair enough. I didn't know shit about him until now I'm only going by the fact that he said himself that he knew better than to talk to agents about his personal politics but he did so anyway. Maybe it was part altruism.
you have no idea the level of insane smear campaigns this guy is under. As someone who actually does watch his content, he does yell a little but the persona he's got is a direct competition to far right gamer talking heads that radicalize boys. He works to combat that, directly, and it works
there's recently been some drama where a very influential guy is trying to destroy his career because he REFUSES to concede on the crimes israel is committing against gaza, and platforming those in and around gaza's areas to talk about their experiences. He has folks on his show to talk all the time
a little while ago he had a young yemeni teenager on the show to talk about what his life has been like, immediately beside this conflict, trying to smuggle aid in to gaza. he's spoken to doctors operating out of half-bombed-out hospitals there, letting them speak. So imho... he deserves his credit
I honestly never liked him for his approach to geopolitics and history which, for the most part I could sum up as "vibe-based" with very superficial analyses, but in the end he's still an important figure for many young leftists and his anti-US imperialism views, >
although sometimes too "extreme", still have value in making people aware of fucked up things the US did and still does today
I mean, yes, his function as presenting the 'vibe' of progressivism is how you reach people who aren't swayed by facts until they're ready to hear them and this is how he's managed to get, and keep, a large portion of guys who'd otherwise be right wing, on the side of progressivism.
I find those who have a problem with this guy are people who still think respectability politics and liberal "we have to take the high road!" ideology will actually do anything or get us anywhere. by now I'd figure people would understand that no, that doesn't really work, does it
😒
