The Democrats lost control because they insisted on shackling the progressives at every turn while courting Liz Cheney style Republicans. The Democrat base is far more sympathetic to progressive messaging than to neoliberal "centrism" aka economic conservatism.
I'm going to have to disagree that the Dems lost because they shackled the Progressives. Progressive ideas were the very core of the problem. Dems and Indies (me) rejected Progressive policies and either stayed home (me) of actually voted for Trump.
