immediate gut response to this is that far too little of the growth of Nerd Shit has been in adult-oriented works. video games and anime and comics have always made stuff for teens their bread and butter but legions of YA brained adults have made this a much bigger problem
saw someone the other day comparing FFXII to the Persona games and saying we'd be better off if the former were the JRPG blueprint over the latter. I don't love FFXII but I have to agree. The Matsuno approach can lead to much more novel places than High School Fantasia Part 743
The biggest anime will probably always be shounen shit, but the broad success of something like Frieren I think shows that there's a thirst out there for something more distinctly adult. (even though that show kind of plays itself by shoehorning in discordant shounen elements)
