...Or Coconuts
Oh man, I felt this. But wait...Atlanta folks, do you remember Oz Records? It had flying monkeys on wires that would carry stuff across the store above you. Wild place but the most fun record shop.
I’m from Gwinnett County, about half an hour from Atlanta. I must not have known such a fabulous place existed. Or I would have gone there. Flying monkeys!!! Who could resist? We had a Turtles. And 96 Rock, back when it was so good 😊
Aw, you missed out. This blog post perfectly describes Oz Records. It was magical in there. I still have my 96 Rock card in a box somewhere--you could get discounts on tickets or music at certain record stores with it back in the day. jimandsallywayofatlantaga.blogspot.com/2013/04/oz-r...
Thank you!!! I just sent that article to a whole lot of people from the Atlanta area — mostly the ones who remember when Atlanta only had a 404 area code.
I used to listen to 96 Rock. 👍 When I was in high school (late '60s), WPLO, a country station, had an 11:00p show of Progressive Rock for an hour. I'd stay up for that. When WKLS (96.1) switched to rock in early '74, I was all in on that. I was a manager at the first Turtles store in Smyrna.
WPLO! I remember that station! And WSB. Lawsy, I think everyone in Georgia knows WSB lol. That’s so cool that you were a manager at Turtles 🐢. One of my dear classmates (Class of 84) worked at a Turtles in Buford. She gave me a poster of Bruce Springsteen and my mom let 16 yo me hang it above my bed
Ah, yes, all the promotional merch was great. The Buford store became the headquarters. One of the things I loved was being able to open any album for in-store play. And reading all the liner notes. Being a musician, I was always interested in what artists had to say and how they did what they did.
Later in the ‘70s and early ‘80s I worked for a major label putting up new release displays in retail stores in the north Atlanta area. And doing other promo art projects. That was fun. Also painted a few of the 6’x6’ album covers that Peaches had on the outside of their stores.
Oh! I'd forgotten about Oz Records.
