We all know LeCun can be an asshole, but demoting him in exchange for wang running things is legit insane

FAIR before all of this was easily one of the most influential labs around. Way ahead on a ton of things, and a really good grasp on very mechanically useful innovations.

this just makes me think LeCun might be expressing the doubts / disagreements behind the scenes that have been burbling up in many other places around the field and which business-types see as poor technical leadership

I also suspect his research team is probably deeply uninterested in chasing OpenAI

I mean, I’ll give him credit for being willing to stick to his own research program. Whether it pays off or not is a diff question, but chasing the direction that appears now to be plateauing doesn’t seem like a high probability bet, either.

I wonder how much is non-AI politics too. LeCun has been unwilling to get in line behind Zuckerberg's pro-Trump pivot, while Wang has been willing to do so.
