Europe “could be” or even “will be” a superpower, but a defining feature of a superpower is force projection. Europe’s new investments are a start, but force projection also requires society’s support for using it. Until Europe can counter Russia’s influence operations, Russia has little to fear.

Too true. I’m not sure how sustainable consensus is. It sure doesn’t make for quick, decisive action.

My optimistic take is that we do the right thing when absolutely forced too, and a crisis after today will hopefully force us to move to qualified voting, integrated military, etc...but maybe I'm too hopeful? 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Nothing wrong with hope. And at least Europe as a whole is not intentionally and enthusiastically moving in the wrong direction. (My country is setting a low bar these days.)
