He used violence in a bid to preserve the Soviet Union. Why do you think that he would not have ordered violence to preserve the Warsaw Pact, if he could have? Germany reunified peacefully because Gorbachev and the Stasi simply could not stop them. It certainly wasn’t for lack of trying.
Perestroika and Glasnost were reforms designed to preserve the Soviet state. Gorbachev approved the killing of protesters in Georgia, Latvia, and Lithuania. He does not deserve credit for the weakness of the Soviet organs of oppression he inherited but tried to use anyway.
I wouldn’t rush to give Gorbachev any credit just because the instruments of Soviet oppression were too degraded for him to use more violently.
Don’t try to tell that to the citizens of Georgia, Latvia, and Lithuania where Soviet soldiers killed protesters as Gorbachev tried to keep power. A popular opinion of the citizens in the former Soviet republics is that Gorbachev never did anything that wasn’t designed to preserve the Soviet state.

Since 1700, Russia has invaded Estonia six times (1700, 1710, 1918, 1939, 1944, 1991). Not all of them were successful. Two didn’t even result in shooting. Of those 291 years (1700-1991), Russia occupied Estonia for 260. No Estonian doubts that at the first opportunity, Russia will do it again.

Europe “could be” or even “will be” a superpower, but a defining feature of a superpower is force projection. Europe’s new investments are a start, but force projection also requires society’s support for using it. Until Europe can counter Russia’s influence operations, Russia has little to fear.

I just don’t think that the Left can have a Fox News. Generally speaking, the Left wants news about the topics that interest us. The Right wants news that will tell it what it wants to hear. Two different audiences with two different approaches to news.
