Support for Labour is paper thin, their election victory last year was based on less than 34% of the popular vote. The @libdems.org.uk could become the progressive choice with policies free of political dogma and vested interests. A people focused compassionate politics. news.sky.com/story/lib-de...

'Could become' doing a lot of heavy lifting. Very few 'cut through' policies. Only one I can think of is 'Rejoining the EU' which is about attractive to past centrist Conservative voters as a lead balloon. Squeezed between Labour and the Greens - not a good place to be 🤔

Especially in GEs. In local elections some parts of Bracknell Forest elected mainly Lib Dem and Green councillors, while Bracknell itself tended towards Labour (huge swing away from Conservatives everywhere.) In the GE the only way to oust the Tories was for most LDs & Greens to vote Labour.

It was the loveless landslide for Labour, they weren’t popular it was just the fact (finally) the public were fed up with the Tories. The Lib Dem’s can take advantage of their unpopularity this time, hopefully reform and the Tories (with the DUP) don’t have the numbers to form a government.

Perhaps there’s some mileage for the LDs in this, but their main job is holding the seats they won last time. It will be easier for the Greens to pick up some (most?) of these, esp if Polanski wins. Quite hard for one party to do both.

Labour knows this. Starmer wants to cut off any gains the Greens and LDs make by reinforcing the two party system. Starmer panders to ReFUK in the hope that a blackmail situation will arise that dictates, "vote for Labour or else you'll get ReFUK". As if we have no other choice. 🟩 🟧

Unfortunately the grim mechanics of FPTP makes that the case. Smaller parties need way more votes to win a seat. LDs are best placed, but I think many lefties will waste their vote on the Greens, because they still can't forgive the LibDema for the Tory Coalition betrayal.

A wasted vote is one where a party hasn't earned your vote. ReFUK is a protest vote and now seen as a threat to the mainstream. Why can't this be the case for Greens and/or LDs? Labour has no right to political hegemony, just ask the Tories.

That's a global phenomenon, no doubt promoted by Russia in a sustained economic downturn. The system won't change until we vote differently. The overhyped ReFUK with a grand total of 4 MPs and falling have a vote share about the same as UKIP. Only Starmer wants to copy them. Consequences.

Not convinced that's going to work under FPTP for Lab this time. LD's, Greens SNP and Plaid combined offer a viable alternative (1st + 2nd places),in many seats, and in red wall seats I'm not sure there are enough people willing to vote tactically for Lab to keep Reform out.

Retribution/punishment is a strong driver for some voters. Much stronger than the pragmatic "vote this our you'll get that". Tactical voting punished the Tories at the last GE giving Labour a stonking majority. Those votes to Labour were on loan, which they've defaulted on.
