Also, fun fact: Brown wrote his racially egalitarian constitution in Douglass’s home. Douglass’s wife Anna Murray sheltered him on the run. He planned the raid in her home, during that time.

fwiw, the John Brown family was known to the Grant family. Ulysses S. Grant devotes a page to their connections (and opines on his JB's methods) in his (excellent) unabridged memoir to which I am now listening.
