So what is the point then? Other than to yell about human shields, which somebody pointed out isn't something just one side does, and in any event doesn't mean the side that kills the shield just gives up responsibility (like they're animals or something...)

As an American I have to reject this thinking because it means that back in 1945 the US could have killed everyone in Japan without caring about the deaths, and I don't think that's right.
