Not govt or science, but Cigna, which was administering Medicare (they just sold off that division for 3.6 bil the other day) already laid off my husband who was a programmer for them a couple weeks ago in anticipation of the cuts.

Essential, my ass. FTE’s and all the contractors are tripping over themselves. Half the contracts are pure waste. Every agency in the US Govt can withstand FTE cuts, 30% of SES cuts and 30% contract cuts easily. Dems are pure status quo on a bloated Fed Govt.
